Avoiding high VRBO deposits, aftermath of Delta crash landing, and a well-behaved dog in business class (Saturday Selection)

This week we’ll look at a handy tip for avoiding high VRBO deposits, the aftermath of the Delta crash landing outside Toronto, and a well-behaved dog in Singapore Airlines Business Class.

Use airline booking portals to evade VRBO damage deposits

Here, The Free-quent Flyer compares a VRBO property they found (semi) directly with the same property found on an airline affiliate portal. When clicking through the CapitalOne shopping portal, the VRBO would give a 2% payout…but would include a $59 protection fee and a $1,500 damage deposit. That’s a huge deposit. The same exact property found on an airline affiliate booking channel excluded that fee and huge damage deposit.

A Delta flight crashed and overturned while landing in Toronto. Here’s what we know

By now probably everyone’s heard about Monday’s incident where a Delta flight flipped upside down in a crash landing, injuring 21 of the 80 people on board. The flight had departed from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and crash landed at a small airport just outside of Toronto. Most of us know those details by now, but this article helps to paint a picture of what the aftermath of an incident like this can be. They’re still sorting through all the passenger baggage for example, a process which may still take weeks since some bags are covered in harmful fluids. One passenger told CNN the night of the incident, “Even now I smell like jet fuel,”. Other passengers describe the strange experience of hanging upside down, and needing to unbuckle themselves to jump down to the ceiling. According to this article all passengers on board are being offered $30,000 which, by their own admission “has no strings attached and does not affect rights.”

On a related note… Delta is seeing its first (but almost certainly not last) lawsuit linked to this week’s crash landing. This first lawsuit comes from a passenger who described “hanging upside down inside the plane with jet fuel leaking on him” before falling on his head and immediately injuring his head, neck and back. There will surely be more lawsuits on the heels of this one.

And now for some happier news. Instagram account “spottytheswissdalmatian” went semi-viral this week for showing a sweet dalmatian dog behaving himself for his entire 5+ hour business class flight to Japan on Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines does not usually allow dogs to roam free like that in the cabin but “Spotty” was allowed because he is fully vaccinated, and registered as an official, government-certified service dog. Plus, he’s such a good boy, obviously. He remained calm and did not disturb anyone the whole flight, which is more than some of us humans can say.

The delta crash wasn’t at a small airport. It was at Pearson in Toronto!

Caroline, the Delta flight didn’t crash “at a small airport just outside of Toronto”.
