Quick Thoughts
When hotel chains offer headline rates like 20% off, that rarely ends up being the reality because it’s usually 20% off the Best Flexible Rate, but with other – cheaper – rates also being available.
There’s a similar thing at play here in a way, but there’s still some good value to be had. For example, we’re going to be in Aberdeen, Scotland in a few months and I’ve been looking at hotels there. ALL has a couple of hotels – an Ibis and a Mercure. When looking at a two night stay, the cheapest rate at the Ibis – including tax – is $82.55, while the Mercure is $106.79.

In the app meanwhile, the app sale rate is $79.57 per night, only $2.97 cheaper than the rate available through the website.

Savings are obviously nice, even if it’s not as high as the 20% discount seemingly being advertised. That’s not the whole story though.
That lowest price of $82.55 available on ALL’s website is an Advance Saver rate that’s non-refundable, whereas the app sale rate can be cancelled up until the day before the stay. The savings along with the flexibility make booking through the app much more worthwhile.
The savings could be even more significant depending on the property. The website pricing for the Mercure Aberdeen Caledonian Hotel is $106.79 for our nights as shown earlier. In the app, the special rate would be $95.03 – savings of $11.76 per night. Again, not 20% off the cheapest available rate, but it’s more than 10% off with the benefit of having the ability to cancel up until the night before.

There is a slight downside with booking in the app which is that it means you’d likely be missing out on rewards earned from clicking through from a shopping portal. There’s a slight chance it might work though. Seeing as I now have the ALL app installed on my phone, I visited the TopCashback website and clicked through to ALL. It opened the ALL website, but there was immediately a popup highlighting this 20% sale in the app. I clicked the link to that and it opened the app. I suppose it’s possible that the tracking would carry over from my cell phone’s browser to the app, but I doubt it. Shopping portal rates for Accor don’t tend to be very high though and I’ve never been able to get a high targeted rate from Capital One Shopping like I get for IHG, Choice and Best Western, so there’s not a huge loss here.

Poor rates, compared to nearly the same deal last week that did not require (their poorly-done) app. (For me, 3 nights with this promos was a few dollars higher per night)
Plus, they want you to use their app so that they don’t have to pay out the shopping portals.
Thumbs down.
