Quick Thoughts

Earning 3,000 bonus SkyMiles on 10 rides and/or Uber Eats orders isn’t a reward worth specifically chasing seeing as that equates to an average of only 300 bonus miles per ride/order. However, it is a nice little bonus for frequent Uber/Uber Eats users as it’s on top of the Delta SkyMiles you can earn as standard.

With the regular Uber/Delta partnership, you only earn Delta SkyMiles for the following types of transactions:

  • 3 miles per dollar on Uber Reserve rides
  • 2 miles per dollar on premium rides (e.g. Uber Black, Uber Comfort, Uber XL, etc.)
  • 1 mile per dollar on Uber X airport rides
  • 1 mile per dollar spent on $40+ Uber Eats restaurant and grocery orders

For the purposes of this new promo though, all types of Uber rides are eligible, while Uber Eats orders don’t have a minimum. You could therefore place 10 super-cheap pickup orders on Uber Eats and be eligible for the 3,000 bonus miles.

Note that you have to have your Uber and Delta accounts linked ahead of time, plus you have to be an Uber One member to be eligible. It’s often possible to get a month-long free trial of Uber One, so that could be worth signing up for if you’ll likely ride/order 10 times in the next few weeks. However, do also note that you have to maintain you Uber One membership until the bonus miles are awarded. That can take 6-8 weeks which, if it does take that long, will likely mean having to make a couple of Uber One monthly subscription payments after your free trial ends. Uber One ordinarily costs $9.99 per month which means you’re potentially looking at having to pay $19.98 while waiting for the 3,000 bonus miles to credit. That might not be worth it for some, but you would be able to take advantage of the Uber One benefits in the meantime. At the end of your free trial, it’s worth doing a dummy cancellation as Uber will often offer a significantly discounted subscription for 1-3 additional months, thereby helping you save more.

Even though 3,000 SkyMiles isn’t a tremendous reward after 10 rides/orders, I’d personally still prefer it to the Marriott bonus card. That’s because the Marriott offer potentially requires much higher spend as you have to fork over $100+ on premium rides before taxes, fees, etc. The $25 card is also a bonus card rather than a regular eGift card because it expires after 120 days. It could also take 4-6 weeks to be issued, so if your stay is in the next couple of months, you might not receive it in time.

Note that you can only earn with Marriott or Delta – not both – so you’ll need to ensure that your earning preference is set before starting spend on one of these promos.

It’s and/or, not just or for the delta miles. The frequent fedora’s hat trick of no proofreading tips again.
