The portal has a very interesting new earning opportunity today on bookings made through Trip.com. You can earn 15% cashback on hotel bookings, 13% on car rentals and – most interestingly – 13% cashback on flights. You’ll have to be quick though as this increased rate ends today (May 21).

Quick Thoughts

We’ll sometimes see high cashback rates available through shopping portals when booking hotels and car rentals, but it’s very rare to be able to earn any kind of significant cashback rate on cash fares for flights. Earning 13% cashback is therefore a superb opportunity, but there are a couple of important things to be aware of.

One is that I suspect that the 13% rate will only be earned on the base fare, so not on any applicable taxes and fees. Depending on the carrier, route, and dates, the base fare might not be particularly high.

The other important factor to consider is that you’re booking through a third party rather than directly with the airline. That means that in the event of irregular operations or changes to your flight before your travel date(s), you could encounter more hassle trying to resolve problems. It’s therefore up to you as to whether the high 13% cashback rate is worth the potential extra hassle in those kinds of situations.
