Earn 80K miles on the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card with no annual fee the first year

Citi and American Airlines boosted the welcome offer on the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard yesterday to 80,000 bonus miles when spending $3,500 in the first four months. I believe that’s the highest ever welcome bonus on this card and it also comes with a waived annual fee the first year.

Quick Thoughts

The previous highest welcome offer on this card was 75,000 bonus miles when spending $3,500 in the first three months. This offer provides an additional 5,000 miles on top of that previous high offer, gives you an extra month in which to complete the spending requirement and also waives the annual fee for the first year.

That’s an excellent deal if you’re eligible for the card. A key reason you might not be approved for the card is if you’ve earned a welcome offer for this specific card in the past 48 months. If you earned the welcome bonus for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select card or the Barclays Aviator Red card in the past 48 months, that’s fine; it’s only if you got the offer on this specific card that you’ll be affected.

That said, Citi can sometimes be a little finicky with approvals. That’s often particularly the case for the Citi Strata Premier card, but that finickiness does extend to other cards in Citi’s portfolio. 80,000 miles is a very tempting offer though if you’re eligible, especially with no annual fee the first year.

Is it worth going for this SUB if currently at 3/24 with my current Chase being the Sapphire Preferred, Ink Unlimited and Freedom Unlimited? The Barclays Aviator is my only AA earning card and I have no Citi cards.

If I applied just 2 weeks ago, does you know how I can match to this increased offer?

Chris

If I cancelled this card less than a month ago but earned the bonus more than 48 months ago, am I eligible for it again?

Jonathan

I got the exec card a few years ago. Am I eligible?

jed

can you have more then 1 Citi Plat AA card?
P2 currently has one, b/c she got offered a fee free upgrade from the noAF version last fall, and if my worksheet is correct, she got her last citi AA bonus in 2019 which would make her elidable for this offer, if she can have 2 of the same card

Justin

Thanks for the heads up. Haven’t dipped a toe in the AA pool in a very long time so this seems to make sense to grab 80k points.

which Credit Agencies does Citi do a hard pull from?

Andrew

They always pull from Equifax for me. I’d check DoC threads on it as some of the banks vary pulls by state of residence.

Sean

Should we expect to get warning before this offer expires? If not, any guesses on how long it’ll stick around?

CTB

cant remember if i got this bonus recently – can i apply again to find out?

Jeff

You can apply again and get accepted, however, they may not give you the bonus miles. In other words, they don’t tell you upfront if you are eligible for the bonus. I went through the whole spend and then never got the bonus.

Matt

Try searching your inbox for the approval email from them. If you know when you were approved for the card, you can at least approximate when you get the bonus. For my last approval for this card, the subject line was “You’ve Been Approved!”. You can also try searching for “Platinum Select” (keep the quotes so your email only searches for that phrase and not each word separately).

Very helpful. Worked. Thanks.
