As it nears the end of the year, it’s time to assess Hyatt elite progress. In today’s Frequent Miler on the air podcast episode, we’ll focus on how to bridge the gap to the next level of Hyatt status. But we’ll also talk about United & JetBlue tying their knot tighter, and how Wyndham’s crappy coupon book doesn’t add up.

Re the mailbag question — repositioning and risk aversion. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii, so almost everything requires a repositioning flight. HNL or LAX seem to be the most common. I also spend a bit of time in LAS. Last month, I needed to get from LAS to LAX in order to catch a 6pm flight to Europe. We had done a points booking thru AS for both flights and had a 3-hour layover at LAX. Just in case there was an issue with our LAS to LAX flight on AS, we booked a “backup” flight on WN using some points we had in our WN account. We ended up getting to LAS on our original flight and were cancelling the WN flight as were were taxiing down to take off.
We do similar things when flying from KOA to HNL as we can fly HA or WN.
Just a suggestion to reduce risk a bit without having to spring for a hotel for a night.
