Virgin Red is running a limited time award sale on select Virgin Hotels properties in the US, dropping the price to 20K-27.5K points per night. You can make those stays even cheaper by taking advantage of the current 40% transfer bonus from American Express.

Quick Thoughts
I believe Virgin Red normally charges 40K-50K points per night which is pretty steep. 20K-27.5K for weeknight stays though is much more reasonable and it can get much better than that.
Through December 31, American Express is offering a targeted 40% bonus when transferring Membership Rewards points to Virgin Atlantic. Provided you’ve linked your Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Red accounts, those Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points are, in effect, also Virgin Red points and so can be redeemed for Virgin Hotels stays. That means a 20K Virgin Hotels redemption only requires 15K Membership Rewards points (with 1K points left over), while a 27.5K redemption only requires a transfer of 20K Membership Rewards points.
The Virgin Hotels property in New Orleans could be particularly interesting. That offer runs through January 31 rather than February 28. Even though it ends earlier than the other participating properties, there are Mardi Gras parades on January 30, January 31, and February 1. If you checked in on January 29 and checked out on February 1 but stick around for that day’s parades, you could redeem 20K Virgin Red points for the first two nights and 30K for the final night as that’s a Saturday. At the time of publishing this post, there are Chamber King rooms available for those dates.
That’s a total of 70K points, or 50K Membership Rewards with the transfer bonus, which isn’t a bad price for three nights in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, especially if you’re more interested in redeeming Virgin points for Krewes rather than a cruise.

Stayed at the Virgin Hotel Chicago late last month and saw that they were changing ownership and will no longer be a Virgin hotel. We got a decent rate as an AMEX HC property, don’t remember what the point cost would have been. I would add that the hotel is in need of a refresh.
