Quick Thoughts
This will obviously be most useful for people booking paid flights with Air India. However, there might be slightly wider interest in this now that Air India is a transfer partner of Rove Miles. As a result, taxes and fees on an award ticket should also trigger the statement credit from the Chase Offer provided you spend at least $100.

Just a caution: I did this back in December and the cash back never posted. After much back and forth, Chase said we won’t give you the points back because “it was not a U.S. transaction”. Well, I was sitting at my home in the U.S. and bought an Air India Ticket after activating this chase offer. Chase acknowledges that I correctly activated the offer before purchase but Air India purchase shows up as a foreign transaction. Chase also says that online purchases are allowed but I did make the purchase on AirIndia.com. So, I don’t know how people are supposed to get this cash back if they are in the U.S. and want to make the purchase online. Does Chase want us to physically go to an AirIndia sales office and swipe our card? Well then, we are all in luck because there are a grand total of 2 locations in the U.S. that I can find (google maps won’t even show them easily) – the closest one is a mere 3 hour flight away for me – LOL!!

I have the offer on my chase freedom and freedom unlimited cards. Will I be charged a foreign transaction fee? I’m planning on buying Air India gift cards since they have 8% off and they’re in INR. Also, from the terms it looks like only the first transaction will trigger the 10%.
If you were to pay for flights originating in the US, you might not pay a foreign transaction fee. With gift cards denominated in INR though, you probably would be charged a foreign transaction fee.
Just FYI, buying gift cards might trigger the Chase Offer, but it might not.
If you do buy gift cards, you could buy US$500 worth on each card on which you have the offer.

I have a coworker that flies air india often but doesn’t have a current ticket to book. Curious if Air India gift cards would trigger this.
I suspect that they would provided Air India appears in the transaction details.
