Quick Thoughts
I’m sure most of you are familiar with Happy gift cards by now, but just in case you’re not – each Happy brand can be used at a different selection of retailers including Lowe’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, GameStop, Panera Bread, Ulta Beauty, etc. depending on the brand. Giving Good gift cards work in much the same way but they have the added benefit of 3% of your purchase being donated to the charity listed on the card.
Something important to note with Happy and Giving Good gift cards is that an increasing number of the cards are classed as ‘Swap’ cards. When Happy gift cards first came out, they were all able to be used in-store. There are now a number of the cards (including all Giving Good gift cards) where you have to redeem the cards online for gift cards of the eligible retailers on that particular card.
Let’s say you bought a $200 Happy Just Because gift card (pictured above). You could, for example, redeem $100 for a Lowe’s gift card, $50 for an Ulta Beauty gift card and $25 for both Subway and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse gift cards.
Earning 8x Reward Points on these gift cards therefore has the potential to be a great deal. That’s because those Just For U points can be redeemed for up to 20% off gas; effectively getting 20% off gift cards for brands like Home Depot, Lowe’s, GameStop, etc. is a decent discount.
Just For U also lets you redeem your points for savings on groceries. Redeeming points that way doesn’t offer the potential for savings as high as when redeeming them for gas, but it could still provide good value, especially if you pay for the gift cards with a card that earns more at grocery stores.
Will this stack with the 5x points coupons through 3/31 at the Starbucks cafes at Safeway?
In theory, no it wouldn’t. However, Safeway coupons have apparently been doing all kinds of weird things recently so who knows!
They sure have. And its been awesome!!
Stephen or any folks,
have u tried ‘giving good’ gc and used @ Lowe’s to liquidate or swap for another? can the thin paper be swiped like a ‘happy’ gc? TIA
Giving Good gift cards can’t be used in-store – you have to redeem them online for gift cards for the retailers listed on whichever card you buy.
got it, thx Stephen; i stick with happy cards
