  • Expires November 9, 2019.

Quick Thoughts

This digital coupon should be valid on variable load gift cards, so buying a $500 Visa gift card will maximize your rewards when paying with a card that earns more at grocery stores.

Those cards have an activation fee of $5.95, so you’ll make a profit of $4.05 even before taking into account bonus rewards on your card.

Don’t buy gift cards from Albertsons and Vons. They are sold by Blackhawk Network, a subsidiary of Vons. 2 of the last 5 gift cards I bought were hacked before I could buy the card, drive home and

Blackhawk was spun off by Safeway back in 2014, and subsequently taken private by a couple PE firms in 2018. It is not a subsidiary of Vons.

Stacking Points

Hey Diana,

I’ve had one of my VGCs hacked by a scammer, however, it wasn’t necessarily Blackhawk’s fault. Blackhawk handled the claim relatively quickly and sent me a new VGC with the full balance on it.

In general, Blackhawk VGC is relatively safe. There have been a few instances of fraud (Southern California Vons a few months ago, for instance, which is also where I bought my hacked card), but in general, buying VGC at Safeway/Vons is safer than buying USBank MCGC at Staples/ODOM, which seem to have the worst reputation for security in this hobby.
