Many of the airline shopping portals are currently offering ‘Back To School’ spending bonuses, although you don’t have to buy school supplies to get the bonuses.
American Airlines is getting in on the act with a two-tiered spending bonus through the AAdvantage eShopping portal.
The Deal
- Tier 1 – Earn 500 bonus miles when spending $150.
- Tier 2 – Earn 1,500 bonus miles when spending $350.
Key Terms
- Expires August 19, 2018.
- Bonus miles are earned in addition to the standard AAdvantage miles earned from shopping online through the AAdvantage eShopping mall.
- “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus miles.
Quick Thoughts
The second tier of this spending bonus represents the best return, offering 4.29 bonus miles per dollar if spending exactly $350.
That can be a good bonus, especially given that the AAdvantage eShopping portal is currently offering high rates at several retailers. For example, Neiman Marcus is at 10x and Nike is at 9x.
Another notable feature of this particular airline shopping portal is that they have many hotel partners. If you were to book a hotel stay that cost $350 before taxes and fees, that should trigger the bonus 1,500 miles in addition to the 1-3 miles per dollar you’d earn as standard.
That’s not necessarily a great deal for IHG properties seeing as Top Cashback is currently paying 10%. However, most portals pay out no more than 1% for Hilton stays if you have any kind of status, so earning up to 6.29x for those stays is an excellent return.
Be aware that the MileagePlan portal bonus ends today (August 10). Although it requires $500 of spend to earn 1,500 bonus miles, that might be worth focusing on first seeing as AAdvantage miles tend to be easier to come by.
I tried to use this but did not see Best Buy included in the AA portal???
It’s on there still, but it shows up as BestBuy rather than Best Buy: https://www.aadvantageeshopping.com/me____.htm?keywords=BestBuy.com&gmid=2027
