Quick Thoughts
Tim mentioned this promotion yesterday when he wrote about the fact that the American Airlines shopping portal is currently offering 3x on Giftcards.com purchases and was also offering 4x on Apple purchases. If you weren’t interested in those deals though, you might’ve missed that there was this separate promotion going on.
Earning 5x bonus miles per dollar when spending exactly $100 or 3.33x bonus miles per dollar when spending $300 can be a great return, particularly for retailers where shopping portals normally offer low rates.
If you’re trying to earn status with American Airlines, remember that the 500 or 1,000 bonus miles you earn won’t earn an equivalent number of Loyalty Points – only the base points you earn from the portal will earn an equal number of Loyalty Points.
“Qualifying Purchases” do not include gift cards for the Spring Forward Bonus so will the Visa virtual gift cards through giftcards.com still work? Seems like that would be no but does any have a data point on this?
Gift card purchases from Giftcards.com have always worked in the past. Those terms seem to refer to the fact that gift card purchases from retailers don’t normally earn shopping portal rewards, whereas Giftcards.com and Raise specifically do.
Data point: Giftcards.com did count for the bonus for my wife (although I was not able to use it due to a security flag on my account).
5% off the purchase of Virtual Visa® Accounts on giftcards.com live. use code springvip. up to 3 cards of $250 and u get 3 points per $ + bonus
Thanks for the heads-up Stephen. This whole deal of LPs earned vs. “Bonus” reward miles still trips me up.
For the AAdvantage Dining Program you can earn 5X after eating at 10 or so restaurants…
Should we then get 4X Bonus Miles and 1X LPs or rather 5X LPs and 5X Bonus Miles?
I’m not 100% sure on this one, but I think it’ll work in a similar way to the AA shopping portal. With the portal, if a retailer is earning 5x redeemable miles, you’ll also earn 5x Loyalty Points, but you won’t earn Loyalty Points from a fixed bonus points promotion like this new 500/1,000 offer.
With the AAdvantage Dining program, I think you’ll earn 5x Loyalty Points (in addition to the redeemable points) once you’ve dined at x number of restaurants, but the initial joining bonus of 1,000 bonus miles for spending $25 at a participating restaurant won’t earn you 1,000 Loyalty Points. I hope that makes sense.
Thanks. Makes sense it should work similar to eShopping.
Not sure if AA Fining is MasterCards ONLY, like SimplyMiles. Will add my AMEX Gold, hoping for 4X MRs, 5X AA Miles & 5X AA LPs.
The dining programs are run by Rewards Network and so you can add any credit card – your Amex Gold will therefore by fine.
