There is a targeted upgrade offer for the Amex Business Gold card that started appearing on some cardholders’ accounts over the weekend. It’s targeted at current Business Green cardholders and offers 70,000 Membership Rewards points after $10K spend within the first three months.

Quick Thoughts

This is an upgrade offer, as opposed to a welcome offer on a new card. It’s been fairly common over the years for Business Green cardholders to get targeted for upgrades right before or after their first cardholder anniversary. We’ve even seen folks targeted for upgrades as soon as 2-3 months after completing the minimum spend on the welcome offer.

This upgrade offer should only be considered if you’ve already had, or currently have, the Business Gold card. Otherwise, upgrading will cause you to become ineligible for new enrollment welcome offers on the card for at least the next 4-5 years. The current welcome offer for a new cardholder is 200,000 points for $15k in spend – a much, much better opportunity than this upgrade.

However, if you’ve already had the Business Gold (or have one now), this could be a great deal. There is no hard-pull on the upgrade and neither your card numbers nor your card anniversary will change. You will be charged a prorated annual fee for the new card based on the time remaining until your next account anniversary. It effectively allows you to get a new cardholder welcome offer without actually opening up a new card.

This could also be stacked with the employee card offers that we wrote about earlier today which give 15k points after completing $4k in spend. Those can be stacked towards your minimum spend requirement on the upgrade…if you did three of them, you’d end up with 127,000 points after $12k in spend, assuming that you did it all at 1x. It’s still not even close to using the referral offer that we have on the site right now, but if you’re not eligible for it and get the Amex pop-up, it could be tempting.

Data point: I received a targeted offer for the Amex Business Gold for 125K and 15K spend. I’ve already had the card and was approved today.

Dee

It was for a new card. I received the offer via email and it expires tomorrow 12/31.

I’ve never received a targeted offer so I jumped on this one. Now to meet the spending requirement lol
