I hate having to call to accomplish pretty much anything. If there’s a way to do what I need online, that’s always my preference.  So, I’m exited to report that Amex once again allows product changes via chat!  And it is much better than before.

Today, just as I was about to call to downgrade my Delta Reserve business card to the Delta Platinum business card, it occurred to me that it was worth giving online chat a try.  I used to make product changes regularly through chat, but Amex ended that ability some time ago (maybe a year ago?).  So, I gave it a try… just in case.

Not only did it work.. I was done in seconds.  Seriously.  I think it was well under a minute between me initiating the chat and receiving the message that it was all done!

Tried to product change Platinum to Gold today over chat. They said a high tier card card like the Platinum card can only be product changed over the phone.

You just received a bad chat agent, Yesterday I product changed my Delta Platinum to the no fee Delta Blue via chat and it only took a minute.

No More Delta

I have an American Express Delta Reserve card as well. For Thanksgiving I thought I’d take my family on a vacation. I booked a trip for three of us to go visit family member #4 at college. I used the AMEX Delta Reserve card for all three tickets. When I got to the airport, we were charged for luggage (supposed to be a benefit of the Delta Reserve right?) Then I was charged $29 for each of us to stay in the lounge for an hour (again, a benefit of membership) So I went ahead and purchased a “DAY Pass” *with my Delta Reserve card, just to make a point. When I went to board our first flight, I was in Zone 1, my wife and son were in Zone 3. Same reservation, same credit card, SAME F-ing ROW OF SEATS (Window, middle and Aisle) > why the different zones? The Gate Agent made a big deal about it when we tried to board together. Then on the layover, I tried to enter another lounge with my Delta Reserve Card and my DAY pass from a few hours ago. Guess what? a “DAY” pass isn’t good for the day or travel, just the hour we spent at our original airport. Then I tried to use the WiFi with my AMEX card and there were no GoGo coupons so once again I foolishly paid for a DAY of internet. It worked on the first flight, but I was asked to pay for internet on the second leg. I guess my definition of a Day needs some research. Departing at noon, and arriving at 7 pm seems to not be a “DAY” to anyone else. And to add to my confusion, with my status and use of the Delta Reserve card I was automatically upgraded to Comfort+ on the second flight, but my family was not. I think I’m done with both Delta Airlines and AMEX Delta Reserve >

When calling to downgrade, does AMEX ever offer a retention bonus to keep the premium version of the card? Or is that just when calling to cancel? Thinking of ditching the AMEX Plat for now (after the new year and airline credit spend, of course) via downgrade to the new AMEX Gold. I like easy, but if I forgo any potential points by chatting, I’ll want to call. I also have the Aspire, so I’m going to try a strategically timed downgrade at some point on that too.

My wife just email to upgrade Amex Acend to Aspire of 150k points and curious if you can use this service to accept that offer?

Can you remind us what is the Amex policy on AF refunds/prorating when product changing or cancelling? I’m thinking of cancelling my SPG personal soon, just after free night posts. Then next year I’m thinking of downgrading my SPG Luxury to Personal when that free night posts.

WR2

OK thanks. Lux to Personal downgrade will work at least.

Probably

It’s also very easy to cancel cards by phone without talking to a person. But this is good when you don’t want to cancel the card.

“It’s also very easy to cancel cards by phone without talking to a person.”
-sometimes too easy that it’s cancelled before reaching a retention specialist
