Amtrak has sent out emails offering free companion fares when you book a bedroom or roomette.  You must book by June 10th for travel August 1, 2019 – March 31, 2020.

Direct link to offer.

Here’s the body of the email I received:

For a limited time, book travel in a Roomette or Bedroom on select routes and your companion travels free. From New York to Chicago to Seattle, you can watch the nation roll by in the privacy of an on‑board room. Roomettes and Bedrooms offer comfortable seats by day and sleeping accommodations at night. Book June 4 – 10 and travel August 1, 2019 – March 31, 2020.

Simply click through this email and book your trip on Amtrak.com to apply the discount. Terms and conditions apply. Wherever your travels take you, there’s a room waiting for you to Get Carried Away.

Is it worth it?

I rode the Amtrak California Zephyr in a bedroom several years ago and I really enjoyed it.  I’d happily do it again.  I wrote about the experience in the post: Amtrak’s California Zephyr.  Here’s a useful quote from that post:

Amtrak bedroom travel is a strange kind of luxury. Bedroom interiors were old and run down, but there was plenty of space for lounging and sleeping. And, having your own private bathroom is fantastic, even if it is tiny. Each sleeping car has an attendant who makes coffee and tea, helps with luggage, prepares your room at night, replaces wet towels, etc. We made sure to tip our attendant generously at the end of our trip.

On the other hand, … Amtrak.  To get an idea of what can go wrong, see Miles to Memories’ post: Why I Walked Off My Amtrak Trip: A Beautiful Disaster!

I must have been confused. I always thought that if you booked a room on Amtrak that it included more than one person already. My mistake I guess.

With points this used to be true I believe. But I think cash was always different, and the whole points system changed.
