Delta continues their recent series of unadvertised flash-sale award drops.  This time, we’re seeing prices from US to both the UK and Spain from 32,000-38,000 SkyMiles roundtrip in Main Cabin.  Additionally, there is drastically widened award space to the Caribbean and Mexico from several Northeast hubs (perfect timing, Delta).  Rates are starting at 11K roundtrip on basic economy, but main cabin is only 1K more roundtrip on most routes.  Add these to the Seattle fares that Stephen found recently and there’s quite a bit of opportunity to get somewhere warm.

Dates vary per destination, but are generally March/April then reappearing in October/November.  Most space is for Tuesday/Wednesday departure, but it’s possible to find good (but slightly higher) prices on other days as well.

The Deal

  • Delta is offering roundtrip main cabin flights from the US to Spain and the UK starting at 32,000 SkyMiles roundtrip
  • There is also good availability from NYC (and some PHL/BOS) to a variety of Caribbean destinations from 11K in basic, 12K in main cabin
  • Dates vary by destination between March – May and again in October -November
  • One-way tickets don’t seem to be on sale

Some highlights:

  • Barcelona, Madrid, London: 32,000 miles roundtrip – NYC, PHL, BOS, DFW, LAX and SFO
  • Barcelona, Madrid, London: 38,000 miles roundtrip – Most other North American hubs
  • NYC to Caribbean/Mexico: 11,000 basic/12,000 main roundtrip – Bermuda (BDA), Puerto Vallarta (PVR), Turks and Caicos (PLS), Sint-Maarten (SXM), USVI (STT) and others
  • Lesser Caribbean/Mexico availability from PHL and BOS

There are probably additional destinations/origins that aren’t listed here, including smaller, regional domestic airports.

Key Terms

  • Basic Economy Award Travel tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable, but may be canceled before departure for a cancellation charge which will be assessed in miles. Any remaining mileage balance will be redeposited into your SkyMiles account. Mileage difference, taxes and fees apply for any changes. (Translation: spend the extra 1K on main cabin)
  • For travel within the United States (including Puerto Rico), $30 USD fee for 1 checked bag and $40 USD fee for second checked bag. For travel between the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Central America, Caribbean, Guyana, & Bermuda, $30 USD fee for 1 checked bag and $40 USD fee for second checked bag. For travel between the United States and Mexico, $30 USD fee for 1 checked bag and $55 USD fee for second checked bag. For travel between the United States and El Salvador and Ecuador, $40 USD fee for second checked bag.
  • It seems like only roundtrip searches find this space.

Quick Thoughts

Delta continues to confound me with the way they release these flash prices.  Maybe the point is to keep a guy like me on Delta.com for an hour randomly searching award routing…

These dates and city combinations are more limited than some others. Still, if the dates work, 16,000-19,000 SkyPesos each way for main cabin tickets to the UK and Spain are terrific, as are the 6K Caribbean main cabin flights from NYC.

Since taxes apply, those looking at using this for a trip to London should consider booking an open-jaw and returning from another country to avoid the UK’s high departure taxes. For example, SFO-LHR r/t prices out at 32K + $219, but SFO-LHR//BCN-SFO is 32K + $52.

I saw FLL or MIA to LHR via ATL or JFK last weekend for 32K as well,

Did you happen to see/check for any deals in Biz? Or at least Comfort? Some of us are too old/long legged/spoiled to travel in “coach.”

Laurie

Booked ORD-BCN yesterday for 32K. Comfort+ was 50k.

Thanks!
