Miles to Memories is reporting on another new Amex Offer that I didn’t receive on any accounts this morning: Spend $250+ with Alaska Airlines, get 5,000 Membership Rewards points. #jealous (no, that’s not a Twitter sync). The best play here would be to use it in conjunction with an Alaska Companion Certificate if you are an Alaska Airlines credit card holder (you don’t have to use your Alaska Airlines credit card to make that booking).
I didn’t get targeted for this one, but the terms indicate that you just have to make your purchase through alaskaair.com, through their US telephone line, or through the app. That’s good news since it’s easy to book using your companion discount code online — and for the past few months, BOA has been offering the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature with a $0 Companion Fare for the first year (you just pay the taxes on the companion – see our Best Offers page for current offer details). If you’re an Alaska Airlines credit card holder, simply log into your account and look for “Discount and companion fare codes” on the left hand side and click “valid” to see your code(s).
You can then search for flights using your discount code. Keep in mind that the Alaska Airlines credit card holder either needs to be traveling on the itinerary or must use a credit card in his/her name to pay for the booking. Read a little more about the Alaska Airlines companion ticket here and all airline companion tickets in our Complete Guide to Travel Companion Tickets.
Bottom line
This is a nice new Amex Offer. I’m definitely jealous not to have seen it on any of my accounts. I’ll be checking back often in the coming days as I have been slow-rolled on a number of offers lately. As I mentioned in a post earlier this morning, I did not have the Delta Amex Offer last week when it popped up (and didn’t have it last night when looking through My Amex Offers), but it popped up today. I’d love to see one of these Alaska Offers pop up. I generally prefer to pay for flights with my Citi Prestige card in case anything goes wrong (See: My $500 trip delay claim with Citi Prestige), but 5K Membership Rewards points would be enough to persuade me to book with an Amex.

Do you know if a purchase of Alaska Airline GC would trigger this offer?
I don’t have the offer, so I’m not positive. The terms do exclude “gift certificates”, but they are known to trigger the airline incidentals credit on the Platinum and PRG cards….so I think it’s possible that it might work despite what the terms state. Sorry I don’t have a more concrete answer. If you try it, let us know what happens.
You don’t want gift cards, but you can get a travel credit with Alaska by booking a flight more than 61 days out and then canceling after 24 hours. Thankfully Alaska doesn’t charge a fee if the flight is at least 61 days away the day you cancel. They’re almost as good as Southwest with customer friendly policies like this.
