Hawaii is calling: As reported by The Flight Deal and View from the Wing, there is an awesome fare available from New York (Newark) to Hawaii, from $373 round trip on Alaska Airlines. These flights are widely available from OTAs. They are also available directly from Alaska, meaning that they would qualify for the Companion Fare that comes as a benefit on both the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card and the Alaska Airlines Visa Business card — allowing you to book two people from around $220 round trip each from New York to Hawaii — with open jaws possible. What’s more, both passengers earn miles. This is a great deal.
The Deal
- Cheap round trips on Alaska Airlines from New York (Newark) to Hawaii, with prices starting from $373
Key Details
- The cheap fares are available for Monday through Thursday departures in each direction
- Open jaws are possible (you could return from a different airport)
- Tickets should earn 100% mileage flown if credited to Alaska (though check your fare class for details)
- Availability from mid-April to early June and then August through February with some blackout time periods
Quick Thoughts
Gary Leff at View from the Wing has the full fare details — see his post for more exact dates of availability.
You can use Google Flights to find dates. You can open jaw with something like New York to Kauai and then Maui to New York, booking yourself a cheap inter-island flight between the two:
If you have an Alaska Airlines companion fare code, you can use the Alaska Airlines multi-city tool to replicate the same type of itinerary:
Note that in the image above, the companion fare shown is $99 because I did not open my Alaska Airlines credit card during the time period since last summer, when the personal version of the card has been offering a $0 companion fare. If you have opened it with the $0 companion fare (as currently seen on our Best Offers page), your total would be $99 less — for a total of $440.68 for two people. Two hundred twenty bucks each for round trip travel to Hawaii is hard to beat.
Furthermore, you’ll notice that the booking class is R. Even with no status, you should earn at least 100% mileage flown in redeemable miles according to Wheretocredit.com:
A round trip is almost 10,000 miles (perhaps more if you play with your routing and pick up some extra segments). That’s nearly enough for a saver one-way ticket within the 48 continental states — and perhaps even a free round trip somewhere when Alaska runs a flash sale like this one: (EXPIRED) Award flash sale: Alaska flights from 5K, many cities.
Bottom line
This is a solid deal. Under four hundred bucks round trip from New York to Hawaii is a deal that doesn’t come around every day. If you’ve got paradise on your mind, you should have 24 hours to cancel when booking through most OTAs — more than enough time to convince yourself that it wasn’t a bad idea.
