Best Ever 100K offer on Wyndham Earner Business card (but with big spend)

31

The Barclays Wyndham Earner Business card is out with a new welcome offer for up to 100,000 bonus points. That’s the best we’ve seen on this card in terms of total points, although it does require a hefty amount of spend as well…$15K over 12 months.

We’d still offer a hearty “heck yeah” to this card, even with the substantial minimum spend. However, Wyndham also dropped a 100K offer on the (inferior) consumer Earner Plus card today, and you can get the same amount of points with $13,000 less in spend.

So, which one is best for you?

Quick Thoughts

I love the Wyndham Earner Business card recommend it often. There’s several reasons:

  • Wyndham points have proven to be highly useful for Vacasa vacation rentals
  • It offers complimentary Wyndham Diamond status, which matches to Caesars Diamond status, which has been a  terrific starting point free cruise offers.
  • It earns 8x at gas stations and 5x on utilities
  • It offers 15,000 points annually upon renewal, which is easily worth more than the annual fee
  • It offers 10% off on awards, including Vacasa stays
  • Doesn’t affect your Chase 5/24 count

This new offer requires $15K in the first 12 months to unlock the entire bonus. That said, you do have 12 months to meet the spend and, if you can meet it primarily via gas stations and utilities, you would likely end up with somewhere around 200,000+ Wyndham points once all is said and done. That’s very, very good and enough for ~15 nights in a 1bd Vacasa rental or Cottages.com property.

However, the new offer that was released for the Wyndham Earner Plus consumer card gives you the same 100K bonus with only $2K in minimum spend…an incredible deal as well. To us, the Earner Plus is an inferior card when compared to the business version:

  • It gives you Wyndham Platinum instead of Diamond
  • It earns 6x on gas instead of 8x
  • There’s no bonus on utility payments, which is an extremely useful feature of the business card
  • Although the annual fee is $20 less, the anniversary bonus is 7,500 points less as well – I’d pay $20 for 7,500 Wyndham points in a heartbeat
  • Will add to your Chase 5/24 status

The consumer card does have a 4x bonus on dining and grocery purchases, which could be very valuable for many folks.

Ideally, you’d be able to get both versions and end up with a serious haul of Wyndham points and the extremely useful business card. If your spend capacity is limited, however, the consumer card might be the better short-term option.

Regardless of which one you choose, these are both excellent offers that should be considered.

Question, uncertain about language of promo…do I need to spend $19,000 or $15,000 on the business earner (within 12 mos) to get the100,000 points?

Nick Reyes

It’s $15K total spend. I’m sorry to hear that you found this confusing! Do you have a suggestion for how we can clarify the wording? The offer as shown under “The Offer & Key Card Details” says:

50K after after $4K spend in first 90 days, additional 50K after a total of $15K spend in first year

We hoped that “after a total of $15K spend” would convey that it’s not an additional $15K in spend — but I’m open to suggestion on how you might word that to make it clearer.

Thankful

While it’s perfectly clear to me, I do run into the same confusion when I try and explain these types of tiered offers to others. I find myself doing something like: “50K after after $4K spend in first 90 days, additional 50K after a total of $15K spend (inclusive of the original $4K) in first year.”

Rich

Hi Nick. The issue is not really on FM, as Barclay’s wording reads as if it was written by congress, which is why I came her to try to get some clarity. But yes, “additional…after a total” works fine. And fyi, I Just found out yall have a YT/podcast about 2 mos ago…excellent content!

John

I had the business card a few years back and closed it 8/16/22. I’d like to get the card and bonus again, but worried about this language in the T&C:

These bonuses and/or incentives are intended for applicants who are not and have not previously been Wyndham Rewards Earner® Business cardmembers. You understand and agree that you may no longer be eligible for any bonuses and/or incentives in connection with a new Wyndham Rewards Earner® Business Card Account after this Card Account is opened. If you receive a bonus or incentive for which you are not eligible due to your status as a current or former Wyndham Rewards Earner® Business cardmember, we may revoke the bonus or incentive, or reduce your Points by the amount of the bonus or incentive or charge your Card Account for the fair value of the bonus or incentive, at our sole discretion.

Thoughts?

Kathy

Is this the only card that would potentially get you the free cruise offers because it’s the only one with Diamond status?

Jan W

Yes.

Mark

Would it be possible to apply for the consumer card, and then product change to the business card?

Nick Reyes

No. I’m not aware of any issuer that will allow you to product change a consumer card to a business card or vice versa.

Paula OD

any idea how long this offer will be available?

Grant

Who knows what the WR program will look like in 12 months. If you get the Biz CC, I would recommend completing the minimum spend requirement much sooner than 12 months.

cmx

Could you explain more on why the utilities category is useful? What are some of the examples that may fall under that category? Thank you.

J S

My water bill, my electric bill, my cell bill (plus phone insurance), my trash bill, my cable bill. So for me an easy 2500 points each month. I just set and forgot as I hate moving these monthly bills around to various cards. YMMV.

cmx

Didn’t realize phone/cable/trash also qualified. That could add up for some indeed. Unfortunately, my electric and cable bills charge extra for credit card payment and wireless bill is tied to Amex Plat Biz for the monthly $10 credit. Good to know these categories though.

Grant

Re: “my electric and cable bills charge extra for credit card payment” you could make a lump sum prepayment that earns you enough points to offset the fee.

Nick Reyes

Also, “wireless bill is tied to Amex Plat Biz for the monthly $10 credit” — you can just make a separate $10 payment once a month to get that if you just want that $10 credit. However, if you also want the cell phone insurance that it offers, then I could see not wanting to switch your payment method.

Robert

I just received the offer from the 100K for $2k spend in 6 months for the consumer card (not biz) I know 5/24

Nick Reyes

Right — we posted about that offer earlier and that’s what Tim is comparing the business card offer to in this post.

Mike

Does Wyndham match offers? I just opened a business earner card account on 2/9/24 after some back and forth with Barclays.

cmx

What was your recent application experience? Did they ask for identify verification? I’ve just opened the personal Aviator Red in Jan and am wondering if I should give this a try.

Mike

I had to send two batches of documents. One by fax and the other by snail mail. To get approved, I called the reconsideration line a couple of weeks after the snail mail proof of id documents.

Nick Reyes

Your question is does Barclays match offers (the offer is from the card issuer, not the loyalty program). I don’t know for sure. I would be surprised if they matched, but I know for sure that they won’t match if you don’t ask — so I always recommend asking in that situation.

Mike

I called Barclays. They didn’t match. Something about terms and conditions of original offer bla bla. I mentioned that Chase has matched before with Ink card. They didn’t seem to care.

Chris

I applied the business card in Feb and still waiting for approval after sending in additional information. Would Barclays give the current offer or the old offer once application is approved?

Nick Reyes

The offer that was in effect when you applied — so the old offer in your case.

Karl

Fun offer when vacasa value existed. Garbage now. Hard pass.

Nick Reyes

“Garbage now” — what makes you feel that way?

If a property costs up to $250 per bedroom per night, you’ll pay 15K per bedroom — or rather 13.5K with one of these cards. That means you could book a two bedroom property that would cost $500 per night for 27,000 points per night — a value of 1.85c per point.

Even if that property was only $200 per bedroom per night (27K points for a $400/nt place), you’re getting about 1.5c per point.

At $350 per bedroom per night, that place now costs 54K vs a cash rate of $700 per night — a value of about 1.3c per point. At $500 per bedroom per night, it would be 54K points vs a cash rate of $1,000 — a value of 1.85c per point.

The part where value dips is rentals that cost between $250-$300 per bedroom per night (and it’s always been a poor value to use points on super cheap rentals). Most other rentals are yielding 1.3c per point or more. That makes a 100K bonus worth $1300 or maybe more toward a Vacasa rental.

Yes, the value proposition has changed significantly — no doubt about that. A year ago, this bonus would have potentially yielded far more value. But describing a bonus worth $1300-$1850 toward Vacasa vacation rentals as “garbage now” or suggesting that Vacasa value doesn’t still exist seems like a big stretch to me.

Happy to hear you out on why you’re labeling it “garbage”. Like I said, the value has changed — some of the places I’ve been eyeing are about to double in award price. But the value is still very strong….particularly if I’m earning points at a clip of 8x.

Karl

Appreciate the reply, Nick. I get your justification – the redemption is “fine” now at above 1.5cpp, not garbage. For those of us who have been redeeming at $500 per bedroom per night for a long time, with that sweet 8x gas and 10% rebate, this is a hard pill to swallow. First, a no notice overnight devaluation, then a slight walkback doubling anything above $250 from prior state. At least they warned us this time? Garbage now is really a comparison to what it was – this is just like the Turkish deval – doubling (well, Turkish did one up Wyndham in a few categories) of cost. Only difference is some value remains, to your point. It still really stings that we’ve left a world of incremental cost increases and entered a world where doubling is the norm.

Richie

Karl, the long and short of it is that your post about it being garbage was just dumb. sorry.

Karl

Calling people’s comments dumb is such a juvenile attitude to have – resorting to insults, I see? It’s still garbage compared to what it was. I appreciate your long and thoughtful reply!

Nick Reyes

Let’s all just be respectful. We can disagree without being rude to each other. Thanks to all!
