Citi is targeting some cardholders with an offer to earn 5% cash back on PayPal purchases this quarter. The offer seems to fairly targeted. While some folks received e-mails letting them know that they were targeted, I was able to find the offer on a couple of my wife’s cards without her having received any communication from Citil.
The Deal
- Citi is targeting some cardholders with an offer to earn 5% back on up to $1500 in PayPal purchases (up to $75 total back in statement credits)
- Must enroll before making purchases
- Expires 3/31/23
Terms and Conditions
- Offer will end 3/31/23
- Purchases must post to your account during the promotional period.

- An eligible purchase is a purchase made when PayPal is the payment method with your linked Citi Credit Card during the eligible promotional time period, except for peer-to-peer transactions (such as PayPal Send Money Transactions), Citi credit card purchases made with convenience checks, cash advances, and items refunded for credit. We reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify for the offer.

Quick Thoughts
Many cardholders received this offer via e-mail earlier today. Neither my wife nor I received anything from Citi, but I was able to locate the offer on two of my wife’s cards my going to the “Rewards and Offers” dropdown menu on the home screen and then selecting “Offers For You:”
Unfortunately, Citi doesn’t feel the need to share even the smallest amount of love with me and I didn’t have it on any of my cards.
If you have the offer, it’s incredibly easy to take advantage of, as a huge variety of companies accept PayPay for online (and increasingly, in-store) payments. Gift card purchases will almost certainly count and I imagine most people will have no problem maxing it out by 3/31.
Not only will this offer give you 5% back, but you will also get the full rewards for the targeted card. Both of my wife’s Citi Premier cards were targeted and “we’re” looking forward to taking advantage of the bonus categories.
Just paid my taxes with PayPal linked to this card. Lets see if the credit posts.
I just confirmed that Gift Cards can be purchased under this promo. I also confirmed that you will still receive the 5% cash back from charges in your top category!
I was going to include a screen capture of my chat with a Citi CC rep but I dont see a way to do that, but he did confirm the above!
How can you see this offer after you applied it – it doesn’t show up anywhere in the portal.
Does the purchase have to be online? Does instore qualify?
5% cash back is just not good enough when I can just use GC bought at 5X UR. What am I missing?
I’m assuming you are saying you bought a gift card at a 5% discount. If allowed, and this promo does appear to allow it, you could have bought that same gift card and received another 5% off that purchase. So when you go to spend the GC. Lets say its a Home Depot Gift card, you are effective getting a 10% discount!
I bought the gift card at Staples with the Chase ink cash. I would rather do that than buy a gift card with my Citi Card and pay through PayPal I can’t stack them because they require using different cards.
Any concern about the word “linked” in the offer?
“Activate this new special offer and use PayPal for eligible online checkouts with your linked Citi® Card to earn 5% back – up to a $75 statement credit”
Does that mean I have to use Citi’s process of linking the card (which involves logging into Paypal through Citi), or will simply adding it to my Paypal wallet suffice?
The you can go through the link to be sure, but I don’t imagine it’s necessary. The link is most likely there just to make sure you get that card listed into your PayPal wallet.
Do you think this would combine with any citi merchant offers you had on a card? For example, if I bought something through HP using PayPal wills I get the $50 off merchant offer and 5% cash back?
I got the same offer but how do you use PayPal at Restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations
I heard someone say that you can do a Paypal checkout at CVS.
There aren’t any CVS near me. Anyways…
I’ve been thinking about this for a few days, and I know Home Depot takes Paypal online… but you can’t buy third party gift cards online.
CVS works.
Can you pay for a gift card with Paypal?
Yes, you can.
