An email came in from Thrifty Traveler Premium alerting me to a Delta flash sale to Liberia, Costa Rica with prices from 11K SkyMiles round trip. While Thrifty Traveler alerted me to 11K round trip pricing from Minneapolis and 16K from Los Angeles, I found additional cities with excellent pricing including 14K round trip from Raleigh-Durham, Albany, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Hartford, Kansas City and Milwaukee as well as 16K from Baltimore or Indianapolis, 18K from Columbus and 20K from Salt Lake City. There certainly may be further cities included. Liberia is the airport you would choose if you’re looking to stay at the Andaz Papagayo (which is offering testing for guests as is necessary for return to the US).

Liberia is the right airport if you’re looking to check out the famed Andaz Papagayo, which is offering COVID testing for guests returning to the US.

The Deal

  • Delta is offering an unnanounced flash sale to Liberia, Costa Rica from many US cities for travel through May. Routes and prices include (but likely are not limited to):

      • Minneapolis
    • 14K + $81 round trip
      • Albany
      • Hartford
      • Kansas City
      • Milwaukee
      • Pittsburgh
      • Raleigh-Durham
      • Richmond
    • 16K + $81 round trip
      • Baltimore
      • Indianapolis
    • 18K + 81 round trip
      • Columbus
    • 20K + $81 round trip
      • Salt Lake City

Quick Thoughts

While many readers likely won’t be considering international travel yet during the available window here, I know that a growing number of readers have been vaccinated and are considering travel. According to Thrifty Traveler, Costa Rica does not have a testing requirement (keep an eye on the embassy / state department websites for ongoing changes if you plan a trip).

You will of course need a test to return to the US. I’d recommend considering a hotel that offers testing. Hyatt had announced that type of initiative and other chains have followed suit, but it’s worth checking into the details with your chosen hotel as not all are complimentary and/or may be limited to 2 travelers per room.

In most of the cases I checked, these award rates represent excellent value for Delta SkyMiles. Cash prices from many cities were in the $300’s. After accounting for the $81 in taxes, a number of the routes included present the chance for 1.5c – 2c per SkyMile or more. That’s why Greg noted flash sales like this as one of best uses of Delta miles.

This is certainly tempting, MKE never shows up in any of these deals, and I have been itching to visit Costa Rica for the first time. I tried to convince the wife & kids that their virtual schooling can be done from any country, but so far it has not worked.

Does anyone know what travel dates does this sale apply to? Didn’t catch that in this post. Thanks!

Just as an FYI, I can get the 14K price for MKE to show up for Jun 01-08 or Jun 02-09, so it is valid for a little bit of June as well. Unfortunately those flights require an overnight in ATL.
