Quick Thoughts

Both of these deals have the potential to provide great value. For the hotel booking promotion, earning 20x Avios is extremely generous, especially seeing as the terms state that you’ll earn that rate including taxes and fees; shopping portals normally only reward you for the base room rate before taxes and fees.

Something important to bear in mind is that the booking is processed via Expedia. That means you won’t earn elite night credits, hotel points, receive elite status benefits, etc. For a hotel chain whose loyalty program you don’t care about or for independent properties though, 20x is a very nice option.

There’s the possibility you might be able to save on the stay too. There’s an Amex Offer giving 10% back on prepaid hotel stays booked through Expedia. Seeing as the Avios Hotels feature is powered by Expedia, there’s a chance that these bookings will trigger the statement credit from the Amex Offer.

As for the car rental promotion, earning 15x Avios is a great return too. The caveat with this one is that Avios.com is partnering with Avis and Budget, so you’ll want to check your booking options elsewhere for other car rental brands like National, Hertz, Sixt, etc. The offer page states that you’ll get a free additional driver which could come in handy if you wouldn’t otherwise qualify for a free additional driver.

My sense is that BA management is trying to repair the damage they’ve inflicted on consumer relationships over the past year. Rather than do what Delta did, which was to admit a mistake and amend changes, they roll this out. To me, it’s rather transparent. BA needs to make spending on “regular” hotel bookings count towards tier status revenue rather than “holiday-package” hotel bookings only.

The worst part of the holiday-package tier status is having to share it with everyone on the package, even those not BA club members.
