Quick Thoughts
The terms of the Amex Offer state that you have to visit expedia.com/amex, but I’m not entirely convinced that’s necessary provided you ensure that you’re booking a prepaid hotel stay.
Having said that, if you’re wanting to stack this offer with shopping portal cashback, I’d click through from a portal and then manually change the URL to expedia.com/amex. Alternatively, if you have a shopping portal browser extension installed (such as Capital One Shopping), you could go to expedia.com/amex directly and then activate the portal earnings once you get the popup during the checkout process.
What does the definition of prepay mean?
As in no cancelation properties, even if i can only cancel upto 2 days prior?
I see one where it says: You will be charged a prepayment of 50% of the total price in the 2 days before arrival.
Prepay doesn’t necessarily mean non-cancellable. For example, to use the Amex FHR credit you have to book a prepaid rate, but it can still be a cancellable rate.
With Expedia though, I don’t know if their prepaid rates always means it’s non-cancellable or not. I also don’t know how it would work when 50% prepayment is required. I suspect the Amex Offer would give you 10% back on that 50% payment, but not on the balance, but I’m far from certain about that.
In my experience, booking a pre-paid refundable (ie cancellable) rate triggers the credit, if you go through expedia.com/amex. Never saw one w/ 50% prepayment. Also never tried cancelling those bookings to see what happens to the credit.
I’ve had terrible experiences with portals ever awarding points on Expedia.
The lst 2 times this has happened (for both myself and for P2), I have had success going to the Amex Expedia URL, and then activating the Rakuten browser extension. Both the Amex Credit and the Rakuten points have posted in all instances.
