In honor of World Refugee Day, Aeroplan is offering 7,500 miles per $100 donation to the charity Miles4Migrants. You can earn a maximum of 75,000 points through the promo, which would require a $1,000 donation. Without considering the value of the charitable aspect, this is effectively like buying Aeroplan points for 1.33 cents each, which is more or less in line with what you can get the points for outright.

If you’re not familiar, Miles4Migrants is a non-profit organization that “uses donated frequent flyer miles, credit card points, travel vouchers, and cash to help forcibly displaced individuals start new beginnings in safety.” It has a good track record and has been supported by numerous travel companies over the years, including Aeroplan.

The Deal

  • Earn 7,500 Aeroplan points per $100 donation to Miles4Migrants
    • Aeroplan members will receive 7,500 Aeroplan points for every full $100 USD donated. That means a $100 USD or $199 USD donation gets 7,500 points, and a $200 USD donation gets 15,000 points.
    • Donations under $100 USD will not be eligible for points.
    • There is no limit to the number of times Aeroplan Members can donate, but a maximum of 75,000 points can be earned per Aeroplan Member throughout the entire campaign.
    • Members also can donate the points they receive for their cash donations back to Miles4Migrants.
    • Aeroplan has committed to fund up to 18.75 million points for this campaign, which aims to raise $250,000 USD for Miles4Migrants.
  • Valid until all 18.75M Aeroplan points have been distributed or December 31, 2024 – whichever comes first.

Update 6/22/24: All 18.75M Aeroplan points have been distributed, so this campaign has ended. You can of course always donate to Miles4Migrants with either cash or miles/points, but the offer to receive Aeroplan points for your donation ended when the cap was reached.

Quick Thoughts

First off, for those that are simply looking at this as a miles purchase, let’s get the math out of the way. If you bought Aeroplan points through the current 100% bonus promo (which comes around relatively frequently), you can get them for as low as 1.27 cents each, slightly less than the 1.33 cents each on offer here.

However, in order to get that 1.27cpp price, you’d have to buy a minimum of 60,000 miles. Here, you can get 1.33cpp for as little a $100 donation. That might be very tempting for folks that simply need some additional miles to top them up towards a high-value award.

There is definitely something to be said for getting the miles for a decent price AND the money being a donation to a great cause, but for charitable deduction purposes, it’s worth noting that the points you receive will be worth something. In similar promotions in the past, other airlines have assigned a value to the miles received that far exceeds the donation amount. It’s important to ask your tax professional for details about how to account for the miles before claiming the donation as a tax write-off.

The terms also state that the offer “starts on June 20, 2024, and ends at the earlier of 11:59 PM PST December 31, 2024 or until a total of 18,750,000 Aeroplan points have been distributed as part of this offer. It’s unclear what happens if/when the 18,750,000 mark is reached – will there be some sort of notice on the page saying that it’s no longer in effect? I would imagine that it will be some time before Aeroplan collects the $250K in donations necessary to hit the points maximum, but it’s worth keeping an eye on, especially if you’re going all in with $1,000.

You should always consult your tax professional regarding tax deductibility of donations, but here is what appears on the receipt that can be downloaded after donation:

But also most people now take the standard deduction anyway.
