Delta has launched a new deal on its gift cards the which, by itself, isn’t particularly exciting. However, it could become much more interesting if a Delta gift card Amex Offer launches in the next couple of weeks as it often does this time of year. That offer will stack with this one and make for a far more rewarding opportunity.

Quick Thoughts
Earning 3x-5x (depending on your elite status level) would in many cases be better than the return you’d get by paying for Delta flights on a Delta credit card. That said, other credit cards (e.g. Amex Platinum) can be more rewarding and paying with gift cards means you’d be forgoing any travel protections that your credit card provides.
The 3x-5x also becomes less appealing considering you can often buy Delta gift cards at ~10% off from gift card sites and/or warehouse stores.
Having said all that, there is one scenario where this offer would become more worthwhile. There’s usually a targeted Amex Offer that comes around this time of year which gives ~10x bonus Membership Rewards when buying a certain amount of Delta gift cards. Earning 3x-5x SkyMiles as well as 10x bonus Membership Rewards (plus whatever rewards you get from the Amex card you have the offer on) would turn this into an offer that’s worth considering. If you’re flying Delta in the coming year, keep your eyes out for it.
Here is my situation. I’m $1200~ away from platinum with Delta. Will the double stacking allow for me to meet the $1200 MDQ “miles” needed?
There’s no MQD double stack here. The 5x is just for SkyMiles (the currency), it doesn’t give you any extra MQDs.
