Etihad launched a new promotion today which is offering a 50% bonus when buying a travel voucher worth $250-$65,000. While that sounds like excellent value, there is a catch – its value expires after two years.

Quick Thoughts

On the face of it, this is an excellent deal because buying a Travel Voucher for any airline and getting a 50% bonus is unheard of. A 50% bonus is the same as a 33% discount which isn’t as impressive-sounding, but is still a solid discount.

The biggest concern here is that the value of the Travel Voucher expires after two years. While it would be nice to think that travel will get back to normal in the next 24 months, there are reports of COVID-19 cases increasing since Memorial Day. If that’s the start of a second wave, there’s a good chance that it would lead to new or extended travel restrictions. As it is, we’re already seeing reports that the US-Canada border closure will be extended through the end of July.

In the event that happens, there’s no guarantee that Etihad would extend the expiry date of your voucher. That could leave you with a significantly reduced window in which you’re able to redeem it, potentially being forced to pay higher prices which would negate the value of the 50% bonus.

On the other hand, things might not be as bad as that. Some relatively cheap flights can be booked with Etihad right now, so saving 33% on those already low prices potentially represents a great deal.

Ultimately, the decision is yours and your risk-tolerance will affect how worthwhile this opportunity is.

Treat this voucher opportunity like points. If you have an immediate use and intend to book a flight with Eithad in the near future, go for it! If not, save your money. Cash is king.
