(EXPIRED) Frontier $50 promo voucher w/ $60 Discount Den membership

Frontier Airlines is offering a nice promo for those interested in Discount Den membership: get a $50 promo voucher when you join Discount Den by 12/30/19. Since Discount Den membership costs $59.99 per year, that could be a good deal if you know you’ll be able to use the voucher (which has restrictions) and the benefits of membership. I’ll have to give this one a miss because my local airport only has very limited Frontier service, but I’d definitely consider it if I lived near an airport with more frontier service, especially given the family travel benefits.

• One time $50 Frontier Airlines voucher on all new Discount Den subscriptions purchased December 19, 2019 through December 30, 2019.
• Limit one voucher per member.
• Voucher will be emailed to subscribed member by January 2, 2020. Flight must be booked on January 2, 2020 through March 31, 2020.
• Voucher has no cash value and may not be sold, bartered, or traded. Lost, stolen or otherwise destroyed vouchers will not be replaced.
• Tickets purchased with this voucher, and once issued, are non-transferable, non-refundable and may not be re-sold. Photo IDs will be verified upon check in. This voucher is not refundable.
• Applicable fees will be incurred based on the fare type selected and services requested including bag fees, seat assignments and change fees to any reservation changed after ticketing. You can use this voucher to purchase Frontier Airlines airfare and associated taxes.
• Vouchers cannot be used to pay for ancillary fees or Discount Den memberships.
• This voucher is one time use only and the voucher value will be applied to the total price of the airline ticket(s) in any one transaction. Only one voucher can be applied toward one transaction and cannot be used in conjunction with other coupons, promotions, Frontier Airlines gift cards or forms of payment other than a major credit card.
• If the ticket price is greater than the voucher value, the difference may be paid with a credit card. If the ticket price is less than the value of voucher, the voucher will not retain the value.

Quick Thoughts

As noted at the top, you’re essentially paying $60 for a $50 voucher and a year-long Discount Den membership. There are several things from the key terms to keep in mind:

• The $50 voucher can only be used between 1/2/20 and 3/31/20. A strict reading of the terms would suggest that you merely need to book during that window to use the voucher, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out that you must also travel during that same window in order to use the voucher.
• The voucher is non-transferable. Based on the rules, I think the voucher can only be used to buy a ticket in the name of the person joining Discount Den
• Membership will be set to auto-renew, so you’ll need to set a reminder to cancel if you don’t want to continue.
• The voucher can only be used towards airfare and associated taxes. The voucher can’t be used toward ancillary fees like those for baggage, seat selection, etc.

That last bullet point is the real kicker in my opinion. Frontier’s fares are dirt cheap, with much of the actual cost of travel made up by various fees. This restriction might make it difficult to get the full $50 in value from the voucher, particularly if you’re traveling solo, and obviously if you’ll be hunting for the best Discount Den fares.

On the other hand, if you’ll be traveling with a family, this might be a particularly good value since:

• Discount Den fares are available for up to 6 people on your reservation, as long as you are on the same reservation with the other passengers
• On valid Kids Fly Free flights, one kid under 15 can fly for free for every adult Discount Den fare purchased

As someone who hasn’t flown Frontier in a decade, I couldn’t tell you whether “Kids Fly Free” flights are common or not, but if you’re able to take advantage of those and/or save on airfare for your party of five or something, this could work out worthwhile over the course of a year. Further, if you expect to book a trip for five or six people between January and March, it should be relatively easy to get full value from your $50 voucher.

Overall, I would recommend this deal for Frontier regulars rather than those who know nothing about Frontier as I’m sure there are some “gotchas” and some hidden elements to consider. On the other hand, if you are confident that you’ll be able to get decent value out of the voucher, this could be a much cheaper way to try out Discount Den membership than paying full price. I’d personally give this a shot just for science’s sake if not for the fact that Frontier only serves two destinations directly out of my small airport (and then only a couple of days a week). I’m not at all positive i’d be able to put this to use — though since my son will soon be two years old, the prospect of him still flying for free with us makes this deal sound more attractive to me than it probably should.
