Frontier is out with a sale on miles. They’re offering up to a 150% bonus when you buy 10,000 miles or more. This brings the miles down to a per-mile price of 1.075 cents each. Is it worth it? I took a look at a sample flight and was pleasantly surprised by the value that could be had…

The Deal

  • Buy miles with up to a 150% bonus for purchases of 10,000 miles or more
  • With the 150% bonus, the per-mile price drops to only 1.075 cents per mile

My Take

I didn’t have a good understanding of the value of Frontier miles, so I looked at a flight that I might actually book for family members. I found that the value of miles varies depending on the package you buy. When searching for flights, Frontier shows the following options:

With the flight I was looking at, the cash and point prices, per person, without a DiscountDen membership were as follows:

Bundle Cash Price Point Price Cents/Point Value
Basic Fare $117 5K + $6 2.2
Economy $146 10K + $6 1.4
Premium $176 15K + $6 1.1
Business $246 25K + $6 0.96

As you can see above, using miles for a Basic Fare yields a fantastic point value, but the value deteriorates as you add on bundles.

Alternatively, it’s possible to pay one point price and pay cash to upgrade to different bundles:

Bundle Cash Price Points + Cash Cents/Point Value
Basic Fare $117 5K + $6 2.2
Economy $146 5K + $35 2.2
Premium $176 5K + $65 2.2
Business $246 5K + $115 2.6

As you can see above, using miles as the base fare and then paying cash to upgrade to a higher-level bundle is a great way to enhance the value of your points.

If I were to pay all cash for the Economy Bundle for three people, the total would come to $146 x 3 = $438. And if I bought similar tickets for a return flight, the grand total would come to $876. However, with this promo, I could buy 30,000 miles (12,000 miles plus 150% bonus) for $322.50. Then, I’d pay $35 x 3 people x 2 flights = $210. Therefore, my total price to buy and use miles for the same flight would be $532.50. That’s a savings of $343.50 ($876 – $532.40). That’s pretty good!

Note that in some cases, you may need to purchase slightly more miles than you actually require, as purchases are in 1,000-mile increments (and with the 150% bonus, that means they’re actually 2,500-mile increments). That will reduce your savings when that happens.

Don’t they charge award redemption, and redeposit if cancelled, fees?
