American Express has launched its first transfer bonus in a little while, but it’s generally not going to be one that’s worth taking advantage of. That’s because it’s a 40% bonus when transferring Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors.

The Deal

  • Get a 40% bonus when transferring American Express Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors (1,000:2,800).

Key Terms

  • Expires October 31, 2020.

Quick Thoughts

When Amex has offered transfer bonuses to Hilton in the past, they’ve often been targeted and that targeting has sometimes taken the form of different transfer bonus amounts. For example, during a past promotion some people were offered a 30% bonus, others a 40% bonus and others a 50% bonus.

I’m not sure if that’s the case here or not, so let us know in the comments below if you didn’t get any bonus at all or if you received a different bonus offer.

No matter what the bonus is, it’s generally not going to be worth taking advantage of this offer. The reason why is because you can often buy Hilton points for ~0.5cpp. A 40% transfer bonus means you’d effectively be getting 1.4cpp of value; that’s certainly not shabby seeing as some people prefer to cash out their Membership Rewards at 1.25cpp via the Schwab Platinum card. However, you can often get significantly more value when transferring Membership Rewards to airlines, so I’d personally prefer to maintain my Membership Rewards balance and buy Hilton points cheaply if necessary.

If all you need is a few thousand Hilton points for a specific redemption though and you’re sitting on a large balance of Membership Rewards, there’s certainly nothing wrong with keeping money in your pocket by transferring to your Hilton Honors account rather than buying the points.

[…] Get 40% Bonus Transferring Amex Membership Rewards To Hilton (1,000:2,800) (Expires 10/31/20) […]

lol, they should have abundant hilton pts to sell after keeping or clawing back pts

I think you’re underselling this. If you can get 1.4 cents for a MR, take it! (That assumes the Hilton redemption is actually worth 0.5 cents. In my experience they are more like 0.38 cents. That makes the Amex point worth around 1.06 cents.)

I had hoped because Amex prebought all those Hilton points that we would see another spending bonus when the grocery bonus ended in July. Unfortunately, it looks like they are going with a transfer bonus instead.

It’s been 2 days, maybe something will materialize over the next couple of weeks. O maybe not, it is Amex /shrug
