The Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve cards give you a companion certificate each year you renew the card, (so not the first year, but each year you renew the card after.) Watch this tutorial video to learn how to actually use a Delta companion certificate, and how to identify flights that are eligible whether you have a certificate yet or not. Watch the video below or click the timestamps to navigate directly to a specific point within YouTube.
How to Use Delta Companion Certificates
(00:26) – To get a companion ticket, you need a Delta Platinum Card or Delta Reserve card
Learn more about the Delta Platinum Card here, and the Delta Reserve Card here.
(01:08) – Now, you can fly to any US state (including Alaska, Hawaii), or Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America
Learn about the updated companion certificate here.
(01:36) – You can set yourself or someone else as the first flyer (who pays full price), then the companion just pays taxes and fees.
(01:53) – It has to be used on a roundtrip flight
(02:12) – It’s limited to flights which have discount fare class availability
(02:40) – The ticket has to be a cash ticket, has to be payed for with an American Express card, and only that paid ticket can earn miles (not the companion ticket)
(03:04) – To use your companion ticket, log in, click advanced search, click the “Use certificates…” link, then check the box next to your companion certificate and click “Redeem”.
(05:43) – You can check the “I’m not traveling” box if you want the companion certificate to be used on someone else instead of yourself.
(06:28) – They may make it look like you have to use your Delta credit card to pay, but you can use any American Express card to pay.
(07:36) – If you have the companion certificate that comes with the Delta Reserve card, you can fly in first class, but you still have to identify a flight where the basic fare classes would have been available.
(08:55) – If you don’t have a companion certificate yet, you can still search eligible flights by looking for that basic fare code labeled on the Main cabin. This isn’t always displayed, but where it is displayed next to the word “Main” for the main cabin, you will look for L, U, T, X, or V labeled on the Main cabin. (Ex “Main (L)” may appear on the main cabin selection.)

Haven’t had time to watch video ( at work ) but read text. Not sure if it’s mentioned in the video but if you cancel your trip the certificate is redeposited in your account which is a major positive change.
