Quick Thoughts

That’s quite the plethora of deals above – here are a few quick thoughts and tips.

App Download

If you’ve never downloaded the IHG app, doing this and signing in is a no-brainer as that’s 500 easy points without having to make a reservation.

IHG Premier Credit Card

While 175,000 bonus points is a fantastic number of points, we don’t have that listed as the best offer on our Best Offers page, instead listing it as an alternate offer.

We have an offer for 140,000 bonus points listed as the Best Offer instead. The reason why is because you can earn that welcome offer after $3,000 spend in 3 months. The 175k offer requires an additional $5,000 spend within 6 months in order to earn the extra 35,000 points from that higher welcome offer versus what we have listed as the best offer. That’s a substantial amount of spending for relatively few additional bonus points, so for most people we assessed that the ‘Spend $3,000 & earn 140,000 points’ is the better option, but YMMV.

20% Discount On All Stays

This rate is only valid on bookings in the IHG app. I think that you should still be able to earn cashback from a shopping portal when booking in the app as the app should open automatically. Keep an eye out for shopping portal rates over the next few days as I imagine from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday we’ll see rates of 10%-15% for IHG.

Note that this rate’s booking dates vary depending on which part of the world you’re booking a stay in – the various dates are listed in the terms above.

40% Off Iberostar

Iberostar is a brand IHG bought fairly recently and is an all-inclusive chain with about half their properties being in Spain and the other half spread out around Europe, Africa and the Americas. A 40% discount is potentially an excellent rate, especially if you can find an already cheap rate in the off-season in one of these locations seeing as it’s valid on stays through October 31, 2024 in the Americas and December 20, 2024 in Europe and Africa.

The 40% discount likely comes off the best flexible rate, so it end result might not be as amazing versus other discounted rates, but I imagine it’ll still be the cheapest option.

15% Off Points & Cash

This is only valid on stays in January and February and only applies to the cash portion of the reservation – not the points.

2,000 bonus points every 2 nights

IHG frequently sells points for 0.5cpp (cents per point) which means you can buy 2,000 points for $10. Earning $10 worth of points for every two nights you stay therefore isn’t amazing, but it’s certainly better than nothing and worth registering for. We covered this promotion separately, so you can read more about it here. Note that if you’re an IHG cardholder, you earn 4,000 bonus points for every two nights which makes things twice as nice.

The app opens automatically? Could you explain?

Brendan

Have you been able to use portals and the app? When I have tried Rakuten and the app I get a message stating that stays booked via the app won’t track

I wanted to see whether the 15% off points & cash bookings changes the math as far as indirectly purchasing points by booking and cancelling points & cash reservations goes, which I’ve never done before but my understanding is that you’re supposed to be able to buy points for 0.6cpp.

  1. Is it just me or does the 0.6cpp not really hold true? I don’t think I’ve seen one property where it’s actually 0.6cpp. All have been slightly higher and it seems to vary by property.
  2. The 15% off the cash portion does seem to discount this method of indirectly purchasing points from what I can tell.
