Quick Thoughts

I always like checking out the lists of new IHG properties to get an idea of if there are any interesting and/or aspirational properties newly opened around the world.

For example, in China there’s the Shanghai Snow World Hotel which is part of IHG’s Vignette Collection – a collection of boutique properties. This appears to be pretty good value, with rates on the dates I checked in March being 17,566 points per night versus $139 per night. This property has access to Snow World which is apparently the world’s largest indoor ski resort.

There are five new Iberostar properties bookable. This is a brand that IHG bought a year or two ago that offers all-inclusive stays. The new properties are in Aruba, Malaga (Spain), and three in Tunisia.

I’m interested in returning to Tunisia, as that was one of the first overseas countries I visited as a kid. I have fond memories of discovering a love of cous cous, being called John Barnes (an English soccer player who played for my team Liverpool) throughout our stay by a server, going for my first ride on a camel and exploring the markets in Sousse.

Even with the 15% discount though, you might not always get good value. For example, the dates I checked for the Iberostar Selection: Kantaoui Bay cost 33,150 points per night versus a cash rate of $110. That’s only 0.33cpp (cents per point), so be sure to check the cost for both the points rate and cash rate before booking.

Another property that caught my eye is Noku Maldives – another property that’s part of IHG’s Vignette Collection. For the dates I checked in April, the cheapest cash rate was $625 per night. The discounted award rate on the other hand was 77,916 points per night. That’s not cheap, but IHG frequently sells its points for 0.5cpp. Buying those points would therefore cost you less than $400 per night – a substantial discount on the cash rate.

There appears to be good award availability at this property too, with at least four room types – 1 King Villa Lagoon View, 1 King Villa Beachfront Beach Access, 2 Twin Villa Beachfront and Villa – bookable using IHG One Rewards points.

Be aware that this 15% award discount sadly doesn’t stack with the 4th night free benefit available on IHG Premier, Business and Traveler cards. On the positive side, the discount does mean more properties become bookable using IHG free night certificates that are valid for nights costing up to 40,000 points per night. That’s particularly good for certificates from the IHG Select credit card as those can’t be topped up with points for stays costing more than 40,000 points.
