Quick Thoughts

IHG has run award sales a few times over the last couple of years giving discounts on award stays of 1-3 nights. There’s an interesting mix of cities and brands that are included with this award sale. One that particularly caught my eye is the Staybridge Suites in Brighton, England. We used to live in Brighton and love it there, so it’s great to see the city get a new IHG hotel option. I’ve stayed at the Holiday Inn Brighton-Seafront a couple of times, although my last stay there was something like eight years ago. The hotel was showing its age, although it’s in an excellent location on the seafront.

The new Staybridge Suites on the other hand looks like it’s up by the train station. That means it’s only a short walk to the Lanes and a 15-20 minute walk down to the seafront. Brighton is an eminently walkable city, so if you’re planning a longer trip to London then I can highly recommend heading down to Brighton and spending 1-3 days there which would be perfect for taking advantage of this IHG award sale. There are good rail links between Brighton and London, but there’s also the National Express bus that can be reasonably priced. Driving is another option, but if you’re visiting in the summer finding somewhere to park can be a beast.

Seeing as this award sale is only valid on stays of 1-3 nights, it won’t stack with the 4th night free benefit on the IHG Premier and Traveler credit cards, but you will still be eligible for the 10% points rebate if you still have the old IHG Select credit card. The 10% points rebate is calculated after the 15% discount, so that will work out to be a 23.5% combined discount/rebate.

The 15% discount will also likely make some of these properties bookable using the 40k free night certificates from the IHG Select card that can’t be topped up. For example, if a property would ordinarily cost 46,000 points for the night, the 15% discount would reduce that to 39,100 points and thus bookable with a certificate that’s capped at 40k points and can’t be topped up. Note that you have to be logged in to see the 15% discount.

33 properties in the whole world, and I can’t believe I just stayed in one for a night — on an award stay! The Holiday Inn Express Madrid Airport. It only cost me 20K points, so I guess I only lost 3000 points. Definitely a decent HIX property, and interesting to see the tweaks to the brand overseas (good: a European style breakfast buffet; bad: no refrigerator/microwave in the room). Also not really an “airport hotel,” as it’s 10 miles from the airport with no transport.

Yeah, on the Continent, it is more probable than not that your chain hotel won’t have a refrigerator. And, in some properties, it’s even impossible to get any ice. Wyndham partners with a European chain called H2. They’re 3 to 4 star hotels with restaurants. From my experience, they have not a cube of ice in the hotel.I was at least able to get some ice from the Madrid HIX, but they don’t have guest ice machines.

WIll it offer the 15% for the Ambassador weekend – one free night, after paid.
Ill be in InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest in Aug.and have the Ambassador weekend night

Chris

I’d assume not. This outlines the discount is for rewards nights only and that is a cash booking that removes one night after checkout. The rate is also not subject to normal AAA/company discounts or prepaid options. I was hoping for the same.
