Avianca is running a double award sale, giving rebates of up to 50% when redeeming LifeMiles to select South American destinations and 20% back on award flights to select European cities.

• 20% Rebate on flights to/from Europe
  • The period for the redemption of tickets under the promotion is from June 25th, 2024 (00:01 GMT-6) to July 4th, 2024 (23:59 GMT -6).
  • The following flight dates apply for outward and/or return travel between London, Madrid, Barcelona and Paris, on routes operated by avianca: The trip may take place between September 16th, 2024, and November 10th, 2024.
  • Last day to complete the trip: November 10th, 2024.

Quick Thoughts

The highlight here is obviously the 2 for 1 tickets to select Central and South American cities. This comes as a rebate rather than an instant discount when booking. As the terms mention, if you book two people on the same reservation, you’ll get LifeMiles back for one of them. If you book three people, you’ll only get one person’s cost back, but book four people and you’ll get a rebate for two of their tickets. With award flights starting at 5,550 one way, that means your net cost could be as low as 2,775 LifeMiles per person + taxes and fees.

While the 20% rebate on award flights to select European cities sounds appealing, in reality it’s a little less exciting than that. For starters, it’s only valid on flights operated by Avianca which means you’re restricted to flying to/from Los Angeles or Miami. The pricing isn’t particularly notable either. For example, the cheapest pricing to any of the European destinations is 44,000 LifeMiles one way, so a net 35,200 miles after the rebate. That’s assuming you can find saver award pricing too; when checking the Los Angeles to London route, there were only a few days available at that 44,000 mile pricing at the end of the promotion period, with everything else close to triple that rate.

It’s not clear if these rebates will stack with Club LifeMiles discounts for subscribers. The terms for this award sale state “Not valid with other lifemiles redemption offers or Avianca discount offers.” That makes it sound like it won’t stack, but in practice that might not be the case.

Don’t forget that American Express is offering a 15% bonus when transferring Membership Rewards to LifeMiles through the end of June.
