Both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines have some great fares available between San Francisco and Maui during January, with fares available from $237 round trip. These are basic economy fares, so you won’t get any seat selection. However, you still get a carry-on and with Alaska you’ll still earn 1 mile per mile flown. If you also have the targeted Amex Offer that’s good for $40 back on $200, your net cost could be under $200 round trip.

The Deal

Key Details

  • Sample available dates (note that availability can always change):
    • Depart SFO: Jan 7, 9, 13-15, 20-23, 27-29
    • Departs OGG: Jan 13, 15-16, 22-23, 27-29

Quick Thoughts

The cheap prices are most widely available on Hawaiian Airlines, though Alaska also has select dates available. Either way, you won’t get a checked bag or seat selection.

Those with the Alaska Airlines Visa signature credit card and a little creativity can sometimes leverage a sale like this with a Companion fare code to build a multi-stop trip that earns a lot of miles. I didn’t try to play with the multi-city tool on this one, but even if you’re just flying round trip you are looking at a decent haul of miles round trip for the price. Cardholders can also get a free checked bag. See our Free checked bags via credit card complete guide for more detail.

If you also have the Amex Offer good for $40 back on $200, you wouldn’t be able to stack a companion fare as you’d need to use your Alaska Airlines Visa to pay for the ticket in order to use the Companion fare. That said, stacking the Amex Offer would be a better deal if you have it available.

@ Nick- You said “you won’t get any seat selection”. Not exactly true on AS. They make a number of seats available at time of purchase for Saver fares. They’re always in the back near the toilets. Once those gone you have to wait til checkin/arrival to be assigned a seat.

There’s also a 10%back chase offer out there for alaska for those that don’t have the amex offer.

Don’t forget to check Southwest too! They are also showing $119 each way for OAK-OGG. More availability for stitching together an itinerary with different airlines each way, and WN may be cheaper all-in if you need bags and don’t have a free bag exemption on AS or HA.
