Meijer launched a new promotion a couple of days ago that offers $5 off your next shopping trip when buying $50 of Happy gift cards. This deal can be done 10 times, so it’s an easy way to rack up $500 of grocery store spend.

Quick Thoughts

In case you’re not familiar with these kinds of Meijer deals, there’s no digital coupon you need to load as your mPerks account is effectively already enrolled in the offer. All you need to do is buy a $50 Happy gift card and Meijer will load a $5 reward to your account that can be used on your next shopping trip.

There’s a limit of 10 per customer, but you don’t have to buy 10 different $50 Happy gift cards. Instead, you can buy one $500 card if you want (I think Happy gift cards allow variable loads that high).

A couple of things to note regarding the $5 rewards. First, it takes up to two hours for them to load. If you know that you’ll be doing a large grocery shop, you could buy the gift cards when you first arrive and hopefully the rewards will be loaded by the time you come to check out. That’s worked for me before as they were loaded within less than two hours.

The second important feature of the rewards is that any remaining balance of a $5 reward can’t be reused. For example, if your grocery purchase comes to $38.52, it’d be best to only apply $35 of rewards to the purchase, as you’d lose the remaining $1.48 of value if you applied an eighth reward. That’s assuming you’ll be able to use any remaining rewards before they expire.

As for the Happy gift cards themselves, many brands can be used to buy other third party gift cards at Home Depot, Lowe’s and Bed Bath & Beyond. I did see some a couple of reports that gift cards purchased from Home Depot using a Happy gift card were subsequently invalidated by the store, but I think those are somewhat isolated incidents rather than it being standard Home Depot procedure. My understanding is that they’d bought Home Depot gift cards with the Happy gift cards rather than something like an eBay gift card, so if you’re worried about that risk at Home Depot, it might be better to buy a non-Home Depot gift card.
