Quick Thoughts
While this involves a long trip, those interested in economy class will do better booking this sale than using airline miles. Most programs charge around 40K each way in economy class, whereas with this sale you could leverage less than 46K Chase Ultimate Rewards points into a round trip economy class ticket if you have the Sapphire Reserve card (and can therefore use points at a value of 1.5 cents each).
Availability in the $700’s and low $800’s is pretty good, with only select dates available for $658. Note that Google Flights did not automatically populate these prices. I had to first select a departure date, then pricing from $658 showed up.
And here is an example through the Chase portal which is pricing a bit higher, but shows it can be booked from less than 46K points nonetheless.
Overall, solid prices during desirable dates. The cheapest dates have limited availability, so you’d have to book quickly. If you’re comfortable in economy class, these are great prices from the East coast of the US.
H/T: Secret Flying
My fee is $45,000 for sitting through this nightmare. I reduced it from $50,000 because it stops in LA and I can stretch for a little while.
This doesn’t include the cost of my first class return ticket.
BTW, on a tangential subject, Cathay let me change the return flight of my $1488 first class from Hanoi for $100.
I only have two regrets: `1) not nesting several hundred of these tickets rather than just two. 2) Booking to NYC rather than SFO for $988. SFO is a lot closer to home.
This would have given me something to do for the rest of the year, rather than losing money….Oh, wait, forget that idea since Cathay now has wifi.
A little cold at that time but good price . The other offer was better $474 ORD>SYD in Dec. I snoozed so I lose.
