If the name J.M. Hoffman in the title rings a bell, that might be because of the series of posts he’s done for Frequent Miler showcasing some of his fantastic photography. So when he reached out with excitement about a camera deal for Prime Day, I figured it was worth posting here for readers to check out.
As you can see above, this Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 is an expensive point-and-shoot, but the deal is solid: According to camelcamelcamel, the cheapest this camera has ever been at Amazon brand new was $597.99. Today, it’s on sale for $499.99. If you’re targeted for one of the two hot 20% off promos (See this link to activate and then pay with at least 1 Membership Rewards point at checkout OR pay with at least 1 Membership Rewards point and checkout and apply coupon code AMEXSWP20PD), it drops to $399.99 before tax as shown above. That’s $200 less than the historical low. Further, stack it with the new Amex Offer for 3x on Amazon to scoop up 1,200 Membership Rewards points while you’re at it. At that price, this might make sense as a buy to rent option (See: Buy to rent: Enjoying travel gear without buyer’s remorse).
Just the other day, someone in our Frequent Miler Insiders Facebook group asked about whether to bring a DSLR or point-and-shoot (or just a phone) when traveling. The answer is different for different people — but this one combines portability with more function than you’ll get on your phone.
As noted above, this model comes highly recommend by J.M. Hoffman. In a post he wrote back in May about buying your first real camera, he referred to this one as the “Swiss Army Knife” of cameras (See: Buying Your First Real Camera: Five Suggestions Based on What You’re Looking For), so his enthusiasm didn’t develop on Prime Day. And he knows a thing or two about taking good pictures. See:

The camera gets excellent reviews on Amazon, and if you look at the product page and check out the customer images, it’s clear why.
If you still haven’t maxed out the 20% off promo and you’re looking for a point-and-shoot for higher-quality travel photography, this one might fit the bill. Prime Day ends in a few hours, as do the 20% off deals. If you’re more interested in a set of Bose headphones or a Sonos One speaker or a device to drink wine without popping your cork or some other random stuff I found great deals on by stacking promos, see this post: WOW: Get those Bose for a net ~$27 (sorta). Or tons of other deals amplified.

If you jumped on this deal, I bet you won’t be sorry. I have this camera and LOVE it. I went through so many different cameras – point and shoot, traditional DSLR, mirrorless – until I figured out a “Bridge Camera” was what I was looking for. Bridge cameras function like DSLRs, but with built-in zoom lenses. No changing lenses. Yay! They are the “bridge” between DSLR and Point and Shoot. The problem with choosing a bridge camera is the more zoom you get, the less megapixels. I tried 2 other bridge cameras until I settled on this one. (A Sony has the best of both, but was so heavy, I would have needed a Sherpa to carry it for me. I returned it as soon as I lifted it out of the box.)
This camera CAN get heavy after a long day of sightseeing. You might want a more comfortable strap.
