Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is out with its latest list of “Spontaneous Escapes”, which are discounted award redemptions that are only good for travel in the following calendar month (somewhat similar to Flying Blue Promo Rewards, but with a shorter travel window). This month, there are a number of routes available to/from North America, though be aware that these Spontaneous Escapes bookings are completely inflexible and can not be changed or cancelled.

Quick Thoughts
Singapore Spontaneous Escapes can sometimes offer a great value. Obviously, Singapore offers these on routes where they don’t expect to otherwise sell out cabins, but that can sometimes work out really well if you have plans to travel on a particular route. I’ve occasionally booked Spontaneous Escapes to fill in the gaps on near-term trips.
That said, I’m not wildly excited about spontaneous escapes because of the inflexibility of these bookings. Unlike normal Singapore Krisflyer award bookings, you can not change or cancel a Spontaneous Escapes booking, so you need to be really sure that you’re going to take the trip. Since you have to book by the end of this month and travel next month, you can probably be reasonably sure of plans at this point. Still, to book a fully nonrefundable award, I’d want to be getting a significant discount. That’s just not the case across the board as compared to your other options for booking the same flights.
For example, while New York JFK to/from Frankfurt is on sale in business class for 56,700 miles each way, you could probably book the same award via Air Canada Aeroplan for 60,000 miles and have the ability to cancel it (albeit for a fee). While most Star Alliance airlines don’t get access to Singapore Airlines business class space, Air Canada does and often has quite a bit of access at that. I’d almost certainly rather pay the additional 3,300 miles and have the ability to cancel if I got sick, had a family emergency, etc.
Still, Singapore does offer expanded access to its own members as compared to most programs, so you may find some awards bookable via Singapore that you won’t find elsewhere. Premium economy awards between San Francisco and Singapore (52,500 miles) or Newark and Singapore (56,350 miles) are included in this sale, which might be of interest, though note that the Newark flight is only available in one direction. Singapore Spontaneous Escapes are specific in that way, where only one direction or the other may be available and they specify which flight numbers are eligible.
Still, it can be worth a quick look if you’ll be traveling a route next month that is served by Singapore Airlines.
