Sonesta is currently offering a fast track to Silver status when staying just one night by the end of March. Silver status comes – theoretically at least – with some good benefits, so this could be worth taking advantage of if you’ll be staying with Sonesta in the next few months.

Quick Thoughts

When I saw this email from Sonesta, I initially thought it’d be worth ignoring as I’d assumed that Silver status would come with very few benefits.

Upon taking a look at their elite status table though, it became potentially more interesting. That’s because Silver status comes with several worthwhile benefits, although quite how worthwhile they are will depend on how well Sonesta properties offer them.

Benefits like an exclusive reservation line are boring, but Silver status also comes with the following:

  • 50% tier bonus point multiplier
  • Early check-in & late checkout
  • Welcome gift
  • Complimentary room upgrades

In reality, I imagine the room upgrades you get for Silver status if any – will be something like a higher floor, while a welcome gift might consist of a bottle of Kirkland’s water. That said, there are probably some properties out there that like to surprise and delight and might offer some kind of meaningful room upgrade and/or welcome gift. I wouldn’t rush out to mattress run for Silver status, but if you’re planning on staying with Sonesta anyway it’d be worth checking to see if the promo code TPBRZ offers exactly the same price. While that wouldn’t do anything for your first stay, if you have any other stays this year it might come in handy.

Is there a more useless chain than Sonesta?

Mike

Sonesta will status match to other major hotel programs, at least to Gold from Marriott and/or Hilton. Most readers here have status elsewhere that would qualify for a better match than Silver

Stookey

Hard to get excited about Sonesta really. It started out as a bunch of cast offs from other chain brands which either didn’t make the cut or the franchises weren’t interested in upping their contracts. I thought at first Sonesta might be a sleeper waiting to take off. However, reflecting back on why it got started, the owners of these hotels are unlikely to make substantial improvements in these properties based on why they were jettisoned from the majors in the first place.
I’m unaware of any brand new properties, built from scratch, in the Sonesta portfolio. Perhaps as they grow by continuing attrition from better know hospitality groups, this will change. With much consolidation in the budget space, there are no rumblings of Sonesta being a takeover target and I believe for good reason. That said, I’d be interested in researching any diamonds in the ruble if they exist.
