Quick Thoughts

Southwest has run sales numerous times over the years, but it feels like there’s been an increase in both their cadence and discount being offered since they made the changes that mean that Southwest is no longer Southwest. It seems like customers might be voting with their money, hence these seemingly more frequent sales giving large discounts.

There are numerous blackout dates and travel date restrictions, but if you can make the dates work then there are some potentially big savings available. Note that the sale gives a discount of “up to” 50%; there’s no guarantee that there will be a discount on the route/dates you select, nor that the discount on the base fare will be 50% as it could be lower than that.

Also remember that Southwest’s flight credit policy is now more restrictive depending on the fare you purchase, potentially limiting their shelf life to six months in the event of a subsequent flight cancellation.

Another useful feature of these Southwest sales is that they’re valid not only on cash fares but on award fares booked with Rapid Rewards points too.

Just be aware that the 6 month expiration of the flight credit in case you make ANY CHANGE or cancel is 6 months from original booking date, not the date of change/cancellation!

BINGO!!! Can’t wait to see the revenue numbers. I haven’t even looked at booking SW flights since they started making negative changes to the program. I have never seen so many sales in such a short period of time. They’re hurtin for certain.

This sale increased a flight I was watching by $50 for each leg of the journey.

Southwest seems to offer “sales” pretty much every week now. Just from my emails over the last month:
$49 sale, book 7/1-7/3
$49 sale, book 6/24-6/26
$39 sale, book 6/17-6/19
$49 sale, book 6/10-6/12
50% off Wow sale, book 6/3-6/9

Seems like you should really try to buy your WN flights (or check for re-pricing) on a Tues-Thurs. Or maybe it doesn’t matter since normally it’s only a handful of flights that are actually cheaper during these “sales”.
