Quick Thoughts
I received a targeted offer for additional points on my paid stays. Whereas there is a public promotion for all members to earn 2,000 bonus IHG points after every 2 nights stayed, I received an offer to earn an additional 4,000 points every 4 nights — so I’ll earn 8,000 total bonus points for every 4 nights I stay during the promotion window.
IHG sells points for half a cent per point pretty often. If I really wanted an additional 4,000 IHG points, I’d probably just spend $20 buying them rather than changing my stay habits for the purpose of earning the bonus. I’d take my bonus as a nice extra if I were choosing an IHG property anyway, but it wouldn’t move the needle for me.
Stephen’s offer was more interesting as he was targeted with the chance to earn double elite night credits. Given that IHG’s elite program now has some value (and valuable milestone rewards), I would find that offer potentially more interesting.
The terms of Stephen’s offer indicate that he’ll get that bonus on his next three stays of up to 7 nights per stay. He would therefore want to be strategic and not register before a short stay if he might be able to get in three seven-night-long stays during the promotional period.
It’s worth noting that fine details differ between targeted offers. For instance, my extra-points offer is for stays between April 1st and May 31st. Stephen’s double elite night offer is for his next 3 stays by May 23rd (presumably he could check in for a stay today and it would count). Be sure to check the details of your targeted promotion.
