The Standard hotels integrating into Hyatt’s standard charts and benefits

5

The Standard is a hip/edgy hotel chain recently acquired by Hyatt. The brand is so cool that they have an upside down logo. They’re certainly too hip/edgy for this old guy. But for everyone else who was holding their breath to see if Hyatt would do the right thing (you cool kids know who you are) or give The Standard the evil Mr & Mrs Smith treatment, you can let out a giant sigh of relief (or toss your gummies in the air… or whatever). I’m very happy to report that The Standard hotels are becoming true Hyatt hotels. And the same part of me that hates wasted alliteration opportunities* is overjoyed to report that The Standard is being integrated into Hyatt’s standard award charts and that standard World of Hyatt benefits will apply.

* Unrelated to this post in any way: Why oh why do people refer to Amex “pop up jail” when “pop up prison” or even “pop up penitentiary” works just as well?

Benefits

World of Hyatt members will receive standard World of Hyatt benefits at The Standard and The StandardX. This includes standard point earnings, standard elite bonuses, and standard elite perks (like free breakfast for Globalist members).

We don’t know yet whether this will be true with The Standard’s Bunkhouse Hotels since Hyatt hasn’t yet released an integration plan for that brand. But I expect that standard benefits will apply there as well.

Brands

Integration with The Standard means that three new brands are coming to Hyatt:

  • The Standard
  • The StandardX
  • Bunkhouse Hotels.

That means that we get even more opportunities to earn Brand Explorer awards (earn a category 1-4 free night each time you complete stays at 5 unique brands).

My Take

After my massive disappointment in the way Hyatt integrated Mr. & Mrs. Smith and, later, Under Canvas, this news is a huge relief. Despite my jokes in the beginning of this post, I will be interested in trying out a The Standard property or two. As I write this, only the Ibiza property is online so far, but I’m happy to report that it IS available for points and that you can even book suites with points.

On a random date in September, I found that standard rooms at The Standard Ibiza were available for 25,000 points or 420 Euros (about $470 USD). That results in a decent but not overwhelming value of ~1.9 cents per point (or more if the full cash rate is higher due to taxes or resort fees).

You can do better with suites. I found that two standard suites were available for 40,000 points per night:

The same two standard suites were available for $1,121 or $1,560, respectively:

Booking The Castle Suite for 40,000 points results in a terrific value of 3.9 cents per point. At the time of this writing, the hotel’s pay-with-points standard suite upgrades don’t appear to be coded correctly. An upgrade to a Standard Suite should cost the same as a room (not a suite) plus 6,000 points per night. In the example I looked at, the cash component was more than the most expensive suite available. That’s obviously a mistake. As a side note, it’s very common for Hyatt hotels to get the math wrong on suite upgrades and it’s worth checking them out because (unlike in this example) the incorrect math sometimes works very nicely in your favor.

This article reads like Greg may have taken some of the gummies he refers to in the article before he wrote it. And that’s exactly the kind of content I’m here for. It’s always a plus when the content is as funny as it is informative!
