TopCashback: Earn 20.2% cashback on Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy

TopCashback is running a 20% cashback event this weekend. There are only 25 retailers that are part of this event and very little travel-wise, but there is one option on there that could be of interest – Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy.

Quick Thoughts

Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy tends to fly under the radar because rather than it being one of their hotel brands, it’s a site that offers travel packages of a Marriott hotel paired with a flight, rental car, or both. It’s powered by Expedia and so the look and feel of the search results is like you’re booking directly with Expedia. Unlike a regular Expedia booking though, Marriott counts the stay as being booked directly with them. As a result, you’ll earn Marriott Bonvoy points for the stay as well as for the flight, plus you’ll receive elite status benefits if you have status in the Marriott Bonvoy program, elite night credits, etc.

There’s the potential for some good value with one of these packages, particularly thanks to the 20.2% cashback you’ll earn from TopCashback. For example, let’s say you want a weekend away in New York City the first weekend of April. I did a flight+hotel search from Norfolk, VA and the Westin New York Grand Central was listed first of the recommended properties. It was listed as $476, but note that that’s per traveler – the minimum total cost would be $951.

I say that’s the minimum cost because it depends on which flight options you pick. For someone going for a weekend away in New York City, I figured they might have to work that day and so wouldn’t be able to take the cheapest flights which were early in the morning. Instead I selected an American Airlines flight leaving at ~5pm as they might be able to get off work a little early, with that costing $8 more per person.

For the return flights, I made a similar consideration. The cheapest flights left New York early in the morning which would make a weekend trip not worth it. Instead, I selected a flight leaving late in the evening which cost ~$25 more per person. That made the total package $1,035.33.

I’m not sure if the 20.2% cashback from TopCashback is calculated on the entire package cost, or if it’s only on the accommodation portion. Let’s take the conservative approach and assume you’ll only earn it on the accommodation portion and that the package savings are taken off the hotel cost rather than the flights. That would make the hotel portion a total of $589.39, so a 20.2% cashback rate would earn you $119.06 cashback which is great compared to how much you’d ordinarily earn for a Marriott hotel stay through a shopping portal. That would make your net cost $916.27.

If the cashback is earned on the entire travel package, that would mean you’d earn $209.14 cashback for a net cost of $826.19.

Package booked separately

Let’s compare that to how much it would cost to book the hotel and flights separately. Booking the same Westin property for the same room type and the same dates would come to $609.44.

Westin standalone booking

Meanwhile, the same flights I picked for the Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy package would cost $445.94.

American Airlines standalone flights

That’s a total cost of $1,055.38. That’s $20 more expensive than the base price of the travel package from Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy and is before taking into account the $120-$210 cashback you could earn from TopCashback by booking under that original scenario. For someone looking to pay for a Marriott stay along with a flight and/or rental car, Vacations by Marriott Bonvoy seems like it’s worth a look this weekend seeing as you can also earn 20.2% cashback on the booking.

Very nice. Any idea about airline status benefits and earnings?
