It might just be that I’m late to the party, but while shopping in a Kroger store in Portsmouth VA last night, I noticed that their gift card rack had Universal Orlando Resort gift cards.
The Portsmouth Kroger was my regular grocery store until the end of 2017. I’d often check the travel section of the gift card rack in the vain hope that they’d start carrying Hyatt gift cards, but alas they never appeared. These Universal Orlando Resort gift cards were never on the rack back then, so at some point in the last year or so they’ve started stocking them.
That could be notable if you’re planning a trip to Universal as it provides an opportunity to save on your tickets. I’m not too familiar with Universal Orlando, but my understanding is that it can be hard to save money on tickets, other than buying multi-day passes which thereby reduce the per-day cost of visiting.
Kroger frequently offers 4x fuel points on gift cards and those fuel points can be used to save money on up to 35 gallons per fill up. If you’re able to take advantage of that full 35 gallon allowance – either from having a large tank or filling multiple vehicles – that represents savings of 14% during a 4x fuel point promotion.
If you then add in bonus points by paying with a card that earns a bonus at grocery stores (e.g. the Amex Gold that earns 4x Membership Rewards), you’re potentially looking at savings on gas and credit card rewards worth 20% or more.
That’s the case no matter what kind of gift card you buy, but it can be particularly useful for Universal Orlando Resort, Disney, etc., where it’s often harder to gain substantial discounts.
Kroger sells a wide range of gift cards online, but Universal Orlando Resort gift cards aren’t listed on there as of yet. I therefore suspect that these gift cards aren’t available in all Kroger stores and its affiliates nationwide, but that they’re more widely available in their stores on the east coast seeing as they’re closer to Orlando.
Anybody know a grocer store or office supply store that sells American Airlines gift cards?
