If you’ve been targeted for this offer, you can earn an extra 6.67 miles per dollar for $75 worth of spend through the AAdvantage eShopping Portal. Combine the above promotion with a short term bump in earnings at Macy’s. The AAdvantage eShopping Portal is offering 9 miles per dollar through 11:59:59pm ET on 11/7/14 (Friday).
When checking out, pay with either a Chase Freedom card or a Discover It card to get this quarters 5X department store bonus. Or, pay with an Amex credit card that has the Macy’s “Offers for You” applied: Spend $100, get $15 back.
Check your Amex account to see if you have the above offer. If so, make sure to add it to your account!
And, don’t forget to apply the 20% off coupon code shown above: VETS.
Add it up. Freedom/Discover scenario:
- If you buy $93.75 worth of merchandise and apply the code VETS, the total should come to $75.
- By shopping through the AAdvantage eShopping portal, you’ll earn 9 miles per dollar: 9 x $75 = 675 miles.
- If you were targeted for the 500 mile bonus, you’ll earn that too.
- If you pay with a card offering 5X this quarter at department stores, you’ll earn another 5X = 375 points.
- Total miles (+ points) earned: 1550
- Total miles per dollar: 1550 / $75 = 20.7
Add it up. Amex Offers scenario:
- If you buy $125 worth of merchandise and apply the code VETS, the total should come to $100.
- By shopping through the AAdvantage eShopping portal, you’ll earn 9 miles per dollar: 9 x $100 = 900 miles.
- If you were targeted for the 500 mile bonus, you’ll earn that too.

Isn’t the “Earn 500 miles…” the targeted offer from United Mileage Plus Mall, and not the Aadvatage Shopping Mall?
I got the emails on 2 of my family’s UA accounts, but from none of the 4 family AA accounts.
It’s a truly sad day to confuse AA with UA. lol!
ken, no I received the 500 mile offer from both United and AA. It is true that the United offer seems to be more widespread though.
My deal was: “Earn 525 miles for every $275 spent, up to 1,575 miles*”
*From 11/1/14 to 11/10/14 11:59 PM EST earn a one-time bonus of up to 1,575 bonus miles from AAdvantage eShoppingSM mall. Spend a cumulative amount of $275-$549 to earn 525 bonus miles; spend a cumulative amount of $550-$824 to earn 1,050 bonus miles; or spend a cumulative amount of $825 or more to earn 1,575 bonus miles.
You can buy merchandise first then return in store and ask for store credit instead of back to original payment method. However I’m not sure if that might trigger a refund of the portal miles. You can always do return without receipt but its a hassle and you might not get back what you paid for depending on what you purchased.
Additionally for anyone contemplating this, I think the Amex offers method would be the preferred one because it makes your purchase $100 or > so one can qualify for free shipping. If doing Freedom/Discover, then the purchase is only $75 and one would have to pay for shipping. However the analysis of Miles/Dollar spent seems to imply that the Freedom/Discover is the way to go.
I actually think that the Amex route is better despite it resulting in fewer points per dollar since it means getting more merchandise for not much more money. If $100 is the threshold for free shipping, then even more so.
Do you know if you can buy Macys Gift card through portal for the 9x?
No one has reported success with that. You can always check the Frequent Miler Laboratory for questions like this.
