World of Hyatt now on Capital One Shopping and Rakuten

10

Update: Several readers have pointed out that Hyatt is now at 3x on Rakuten as well.

There are many things to love about Hyatt, but shopping portal rewards have not traditionally been among them. Major hotel brands like Marriott, Hilton, and IHG consistently appear on many shopping portals, sometimes offering 20%+ back on hotel stays. However, outside of a confined geographic area (like Hyatt India) or points sales, stacking portal rewards with Hyatt stays has been difficult.

Could the work be turning, though? Hyatt is now appearing on Capital One Shopping at a consistent 2x back, and many of us have been getting targeted offers that are much, much better. We’ve seen several reports from our Frequent Miler Insiders Facebook group of targeted Capital One Shopping email offers for 10-15% back on Hyatt stays, and I received one for 14% back today, up to $1,000 in total rewards. All stays in North America are included.

The News

Terms and Conditions

  • Only eligible for properties in North America and the Caribbean.
  • Not eligible for purchases of gift cards.
  • My offer had a $1,000 maximum in total rewards.

Quick Thoughts

For those unfamiliar, Capital One Shopping is a public shopping portal that anyone can join and use. No Capital One card is required to use it. Rewards earned through this portal can only be redeemed for merchant gift cards, not for cash back or Capital One Miles.

Because of this, I don’t value Capital One Shopping rewards as highly as those earned through portals like Rakuten or TopCashBack, which allow you to earn cashback. That said, Capital One Shopping often has targeted offers for crazy multipliers, like 30-70%. At those rate, I’m willing to take a haircut from rewards paid out as gift cards.

Seeing Hyatt in any portal is a surprise, let alone at 14% back. We have no idea whether or not this is a temporary situation for Black Friday, or the beginning of a longer-term capacity to stack additional rewards with Hyatt stays. If it sticks around, and we continue to see double-digit cashback offers, it will be a welcome change for those with paid Hyatt stays.

Most portals technically exclude award stays from earning rewards, but I’ve had periodic success with both IHG and Marriott, including over the Summer when I earned $250 back on an award stay at the JW Marriott Masai Mara with Capital One Shopping. I have no idea if that will be successful with Hyatt – I’ve never had the opportunity to try before – but, it’s certainly worth a shot.

JohnnyBoy

Hallelujah.
I noticed this yesterday on Rakuten.

TravelGeek

Hope to see them on their airline partner’s shopping portal (AA Shopping) soon. Also run by Rakuten.

Nathan

This is VERY good news. Now, if National Car Rental would show up at 30% like the hated Hertz… Then we would be talking about some serious travel cash.

Troy

also 12x for me on capital one offers which is much more interesting

Randy W.

I also found Hyatt on Rakuten @ a 3% rate. I really hope this is something we continue to see going forward.

Tim I’m also seeing 3X back on Rakuten for Hyatt (at least for today 11/26) – I don’t recall seeing that before?

Harold
