Update: This one appears dead now. Great deal for those who were able to act fast.
United and Air New Zealand are running a fantastic sale on flights to Auckland, New Zealand from tons of US Cities – including smaller markets. I haven’t searched all dates and routes, but I’ve found prices from the West Coast starting at $378 round trip and from New York starting at $583 round trip. Those are great prices to and from New Zealand.
Availability & examples
Availability is wide open. The easiest way to find cheap dates is using Google Flights. If you want to save a bit more, take the dates you’ve found via Google Flights and plug them into airfare meta-search site Momondo (Thrifty Traveler has a good write-up on Momondo explaining how they offer cheaper fares). I’m seeing tons of dates from January through early June and then from August through early October.
Here is Santa Ana, California to Auckland in April and May:
I randomly picked dates that were $410 (Feburary 7-14):
and put them into Momondo:
It’s even cheaper out of San Francisco, with prices from just $378 round trip.
I’m seeing similarly stellar availability out of New York. Here’s next May and June:
As you can see, Google Flights prices it out at $610 round trip. You can book through Momondo for as low as $583
According to Scott’s Cheap Flights, these prices are available from many US Cities. I even found $583 round trip out of Albany, NY.
Here are a few other city links to Google Flights (listed with Google Flights prices – these will be cheaper with Momondo), but get over to Google Flights and put in your city if you don’t see it on the list.
- Dallas $410
- Houston $496 nonstop!
- Albuquerque $410
- Las Vegas $410
- Phoenix $410
- Seattle $410
- San Francisco $396
- Chicago $610
- Cleveland $610
- Detroit $615
- Nashville $610
- Atlanta $610
- Tampa $610
- Miami $610
- Philadelphia $610
- Pittsburgh $610
- Louisville $609
- Boston $610
Chase Ultimate Rewards
For those curious, I do see these flights through Ultimate Rewards. That means you could fly from San Francisco to New Zealand for just over 26K points round trip if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve:
Or out of a tiny market like Albany for less than 41K round trip:
That’s pretty terrific.
Will it earn miles?
According to the couple of dates I plugged into ITA Matrix, these are L-class fares. Assuming you’re booking a United L-class fare, it appears to earn 50% mileage flown in most Star Alliance programs according to Wheretocredit.com.
Bottom line
Prices and availability like this to a popular destination like New Zealand will not last long. Through most OTAs and airline sites, you should be able to cancel without penalty within 24 hours of booking. At these prices, I’d recommend booking ASAP and figuring out the details within the next 24 hours. Do check the restrictions of the site with which you book before purchasing.
H/T: Slickdeals and Scott’s Cheap Flights
This one does appear to be dead now. I’ve update the post accordingly. Google Flights is still showing SNA-SYD at $559 RT, but I can’t find it bookable anywhere. Might be worth a few minutes of searching to Australia to see if you can find a site that will book it at that price.
Looks like they all show up as $810 from PHX or LAS, LAS and SFO look like they are high $700’s. Looks dead to me. Anyone else see anything available?
It looks dead, I’ve pretty much searched every west coast city, cheapest I have seen is $735 from SFO, still a good deal if you had something planned but not HOT.
Really, coach for 16 hours. Not much comfort and style in that.
True. But with the cash or points you save, you can get yourself a pretty comfortable and stylish room in Auckland ;-).
