Update: We now have a picture of the sign in-store and our own Stephen Pepper reports that you can buy a limit of 2, but they need to be rung up in separate transactions (otherwise the system will only take $5 off of each card).
A deal popped up over the weekend at GiftCardMall to get a $60 Happy Gift Card for $50. Doctor of Credit reports that there may be an even better deal running at Office Max this week: $10 off $50 on Happy Gift Cards. That’s 20% off (as opposed to 16.667% off) and stacks with 5x on office supplies if you use a card with one of the Best Category Bonuses.

Quick Thoughts
DoC reports that he only had one datapoint, but sales like this are usually nationwide and it isn’t altogether uncommon for Office Max/Depot to offer an unadvertised gift card deal.
Whether or not these cards make any sense for you depends on how you’re able to use them and whether or not you have a use for the included merchants. I haven’t yet seen these Happy cards in person, but I see a commenter at DoC mentions that the entire card number is exposed on the packaging, which certainly seems like it would make them susceptible to rampant fraud. If that is the case, I’d suggest only buying them with a plan to use them almost immediately. If that’s the case on the packaging, I’d have to imagine that changing sooner or later when they deal with lots of reports of fraudulent use. At any rate, if you’re stopping by Office Max/Depot, this might be worth checking out, just be aware of any risks.

I don’t really understand what you mean by ringing them up separately.
I simply bought two cards, each for $25, in a single transaction, and automatically received the $10 discount.
You could do that. If you wanted to buy two $50 cards, you would need 2 separate transactions.
Just went to my local Office Depot and the mangager told me that they hadn’t received their shipment of any of the Happy cards, but they did have their sign out. Went there just for this, so that was annoying.
Has anyone tried to buy any of the cards that list Home Depot or Bed Bath & Beyond and then use the card to buy gift cards off the racks at those stores? I’m assuming that this would work. I don’t think you’d find a better deal than 20% off Disney or gas gift cards and earn 5X Ultimate Rewards at the same time. Anybody know of any other listed merchants with a gift card rack?
I bought a Home Depot gift card from Home Depot yesterday with a Happy Guy GC, so it certainly seems to work there. The Home Depot I visited had a poor selection of 3rd party gift cards, so Home Depot was the best option for reselling.
I’m planning on visiting Bed Bath & Beyond tomorrow to make sure I can use a Happy Lady card to buy Shell or BP GCs.
Stephen: have you bought 3rd part gift cards from BB&B with Happy Lady cards?
Yes, I was able to buy eBay GCs at BB&B, so there’s no issue with their system accepting the Happy Lady cards.
The bigger issue will be whether the workers allow it. I had a cashier questioning whether or not they should allow me to pay with that card. She seemed to want to not allow it, but she asked her supervisor and he said that so long as the payment was processed as credit rather than a gift card, it was fine with him. There might be employees/supervisors who don’t share that view though, so it’s something to bear in mind.
Is it possible to re-sell these?
I don’t think so. These are relatively new, so there’s not a lot of data points out there. But I understand they basically look like a Visa Gift Card (16 digits / expiration date / CVV) but are limited as to where they will work (similar to the “Grocery Everywhere” or “Dining Everywhere” Visas that Office Depot / Max sells.
1 per transaction only or can you buy 10 in one transaction?
Not sure as I haven’t been to the store yet this week.
