Quick Thoughts

Target runs this deal every year and regular Target shoppers always get excited about the chance to save up to $50. You can load these gift cards to your Target wallet and use them on your phone to pay in-store, making them easy to use over time. Many people will find this worthwhile for personal use, particularly those who shop regularly at Target and/or are trying to, ahem, hit the target for minimum spend on a new credit card welcome offer. Note that you’ll need to load the coupon to Target circle before buying the gift cards.

If you don’t shop at Target regularly, this could still be useful depending on your resale avenues. I wouldn’t expect to turn much of a profit, but for many the chance to break even on a decent chunk of spend is appealing.

We don’t recommend trying to game this and exceed the per-customer limit. A few years ago, there were reports from people whose gift cards were zeroed out days after the promotion, which would be a huge headache.

There are several worthwhile cards to use. Target is one of the Q4 5% categories for the Discover It and the Chase Freedom cards have PayPal as a 5x category as well, so if you used one via PayPal you’d trigger it. Another good option would be the U.S.Bank Altitude Reserve, since that card earns 3x on in-person mobile wallet payments. If you used that with something like Google Pay or Apple Pay, you would earn 3x, which is worth 4.5% back towards travel. Outside of that, just use your best “everywhere else” card.

Do you think it would be safe to put the $500 on the AmEx Business Gold to hit my bonus? Or would that be enough for clawback?

Pam

Hi Tim, can you use a Discover card in-store to buy these (I know not online). Thx

VIS
  • Valid online & in-store.
Pam

Thank you

VIS

Thanks. Got the deal, put it on my Discover card, $22.50 cash back, $50 target discount and my red card has $25 off after 3 purchases of $90 each by Christmas.

You can buy online using Paypal and a Chase Freedom card for 5% back, no?

Brian C

1st bullet point under The Deal should say 12/2 and 12/3

Phillip B

Can you use Target gift cards to buy Disney gift cards? I think the answer is no, but looking for confirmation and hope my assumption is wrong.

Frank

You cannot use the gift cards at Target to buy any other gift card.

Mark H

Target is at 5% for this quarter on Discover (I guess that’s not “points”). They also take PayPal so you should be able to use Freedom/Freedom Flex for 5x points.

Andrew

Yeah Discover is not always top of mind since it’s straight cash back but the 5% categories are still worth using if you can’t get at least 3X on another card for the category. And anyone with the first year double points offer will earn 10%.
